Oh shizz....NO brakes!!

  Clio 172
Hullo there everyone! Firstly, sorry if im posting this in the wrong place..im new to online forums! A little problem with my lovely 172!

I recently discovered that my car will not brake when going round corners, which was no fun at all!! (Seatbelts save lifes but they dont stop your ass from eating the seat!)

Anything from 10mph onwards, slight to full lock the brake pedal just kicks back against my foot! Ive checked for the obvious, fluid level, wear on the pads etc but they seem fine! I then took the fuse out of the ABS and it now pulls up straight and true...but this flags all the lights up on the dash. Ive been told all sorts of stories about what it is, even Renault Tech blokes that work at Renault but no one can seem to put the finger on it and diagnose it properly!! It also shows no fault codes when plugged in!

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys, thanks for your time :)

not sure if it would be this but have you checked your abs rings behind the hub?

Sounds like an ABS module fault... do get it looked at pretty soon.

Nice one chaps! Its been off the road for a month or two basically because i was scared of the thing after that lol! Its in for MOT on wednesday and ive told the bloke doing it to check the rings and also the wheel bearings! Just wondered if it had happened to anyone else and they knew a 'quick fix' I heard quite a few clio's got recalled for brake related stuff and things!

Yh someone told me they do it when they **** a leg, but i was only doing 25-30 the first time it happened!?

It really needs a proper CLIP session not a "code reading" session as Live data will help to pinpoint this however it 100% wont be reluctor ring/target related. You need to understand how the ABS system works and there are serval versions depending on age and equipment deployed in the vehicle - The Clio II sport tends to have either ABS Only or ABS + ESP.

If it were target related it would do it all the time not when turning. Obviously this is steering angle related so its most likely the SAS sending a false/erroneous signal to the ABS module or the ABS module itself is miss-interpruting the SAS output. It could even be something as simple as a CAN-Bus fault and changing pricey parts may not actually fix the issue!

It needs to be looked at by a competent person though as its dangerous with the fuse in amd in this weather, with no power to the ABS module your brake bias is back to mechanical 50/50 which isnt safe either.

Had it before and it was play in a front wheel bearing. When turning the disc moved and pushed the pads away from the disc. My money is on a front wheel bearing having play in it.

Mine used to pulsate just while pulling away when cold, i just wire brushed the target rings on the front and it had new rear discs / target rings at that time too , after that it was sorted
