That's gearbox oil mate, where's the leak come from?
Sounds like you've split the boot on the NS driveshaft inner CV
No you haven't split your CV boot. You have just let the drive shaft pop out the gear box.
To top it up you need a bit of hose and an oil cone thing. There is a nipple on the gear box, put the hose on that and then fill it up.
PS your drive will reek forever.
On the newer models they can just pop out.
I have seen it done.

Dont drive the car without gearbox oil in mate, go get some and top it up asap.
I had this exact problem when lowering my car a month or two ago.... Was it the passenger side you knocked out by any chance?
I found that the drivers side was very well held in, but the passenger side just popped out very easy, popped back in no problem though.
As for what oil, go to your local motor factor and just ask for some, I managed to get bottles of the stuff that had a little hose that pulled out of the top so that you didnt have to try and figure out a way of doing it yourself, very easy.
As for the location of where to fill up, a small black or white hand screw on the front of the gearbox, (by front I mean the part nearest the headlights)
I found it easier to top it back up by taking the fan of the radiator, only four bolts and gave you lots more room.
Just topped up my g box oil the other day, Used 75w80 (check its the same for your box) Use a long piece of garden hose and a funnel wedged into one end.
Undo the black butterfly screw on the front of the box (just on the right side of the engine bay look down) Had to split the hose at the entry end because it was slightly too big for the filling hole, Got it in there eventually and just started topping up, Taking it out every time and sticking my finger in to check the level.
Fill up till its dribbling out, Make sure the cars on a flat surface.
Have a drip tray or something under the car.
An easy job, Just a bit fiddly.
Was it the drivers side driveshaft by any chance?
Its only the passenger side shaft thats bolted to the gearbox as pictured above. The drivers side simply pushes in and will sonetimes come out when removing the strut. Also same on saxo/xsara vtr/vts and peugeots iirc.
As long as you pushed the driveshaft back into the gearbox itll be fine. Top up gearbox oil as described above.
ok guys im back after finishing lowering my car took about hmmmm 1 million hours? lol was doin the rear in the dark
i managed to shove the shaft back in before all the oil poured out and from what i can see there is no 3 bolt thing, so i THINK that it is wat boosh and aluco are on about.
thanks for the top up guide as well... what the best oil to use? and does anyone have pictures of this nipple you speak of!?!?
TA VERY VERY MUCH!![]()
