Oil change went wrong...

Den

  Clio II/II 1.2 16V
Those w*****s at Halfords sold me a wrong oil filter, and I only noticed that when my old oil was drained...
I ended up leaving my old filter and putting in new oil.
Not much use, I ruin my new oil I believe...

Now I wanna do servicing to my engine again, got all I need, just wanted to ask:
shall I change the oil again? I got the right filter this time, but really don't want to be buing another oil...
I run on this oil for about 1000 miles or more...

Any advice would apreciate, Thanks!

leave the oil in it will be ok, or drain it and re-use it ? halfords allways try to sell me the wrong oil filter, always goto motorparts direct for mine cheaper too.

It's Castrol Magnetic 10w/40
And last time I checked it it was darker that I would expect it to be...

Get some Elf Excellium or Total Quartz 7000 (same stuff)

Most total filling stations do 5 litres for £20.

Bought a filter from Halfords and didnt check the acne ridden moron had given you the right one before you drained the oil. That fella is what's called a schoolboy error!

Is anyone really pissed off at the lack of care in the parts and servicing industry?

For 50 quid an hour I want a Nasa scientist looking after my car not some spotty, couldn't care less, 17 year old!

Fair point but we shouldn't have to double check for incompetence every time we deal with these people.

picked up a bottle 5l of total quartz today... hopefully it won't make my engine sound like a bag of spanners like the mangash*t!

A million things can go wrong when you're working on a car. I'm not saying he should have to I agree he shouldnt. But all too many times i've had to bail a mate out because they've immobilised their car due to not checking they've got the right part or tool or breaking something midway through doing a job.

The filter just cleans the oil and its ok for 12k realy. OK the oil will be dirsty as the old filter holds some oil but its nothing to realy worry about.

I already purchased the right filter from the dealer, and it cos me about £20. Also I bought spark plugs, the new air filter, and fitted it already. The old one has gone for over 10k, was a bit dusty and some oil was on it...

I just wanna put service it as cheap as possible with good quality parts and get the best performance and fuel consumtion.

BTW, there is a thread set up by me about miles per gallon and pushing it up.

Servicing basicly improves the performance of the engine. What about everything else, like wheels, do they need to be oiled/parts changed/etc; gear box and gear box oil. How much does it affect the fuel consumption?

Shouldmt need to change the oil again unless youve done over 500 miles. just alow alll your oil to settle in the sump then change it. You may need to top up a little because the filter retains some oil.

In defence to Halfords, we are not specialsts and cannot remember every part for every car. we can only rely on the crappy outdated system. (in which all part info is prvided by manufacturers) which i complain to head office about regularly.

If you had checked your part before hand ime almost certain they would have swapped it for the right one without any hasstle.

:)

You mean they deliberately try and sell you the wrong one or that halfrauds just donk know what their talking about?
I went to halfrauds to get an oil filter but i didnt have to ask anyone, they had a chart with most cars and tellys you which one you need. If you know what size engine you've got and the correct model, you cant go wrong really.

I think it's pretty over 1k... :)
OK. Oil change... :clown:

silkolene 5w 40 mate - if not any 5w 40.
I was keeping an eye on this type of oil...
Is anyone using it, and what dis/advantages are?
Is it worth the money?

I switched to it at my 12k and i hae noticed subtle differences. The car feels smoother, mpg has improved slightly also. The real test will be at 72k though - seeing what the engine looks like then compared to car on standard oil will be interesting.

no disadvantages, all in all the better mpg could justify any extra expence as you'd get your money back within weeks.

My car is at 71k now and it's only 02 plate... LOL
I can't help myself, I just enjoy driving it so much... :D

I heart that 5w40 oils you have to top up very often too...

I also have to defend Halfords here. The guys at our local branch in Epsom are top lads. There are two in particular, Billy and Zak. One owns a Clio the other owns a Golf. They are both really clued up and are extremely helpful, as are all the other staff there.

I also agree with Slick Rick, there are normally plenty of charts for you to look up your required parts on, so if you know what car you have you can't really go wrong.

I give our Halfords 10/10. :D

I've done 3k since my service and it hasn't needed topping up yet. I had to do it every couple of thousand with the oem stuff - having said that the engine naturally uses more when it's being run -in.

Just done an oil change on mine, the nob in Halfords assured me that Renault didn't make a 16v 1.2, didn't even look on his computer. Wanted to shut his head in the car door lockstock style!
Managed to find the correct one by looking in the aisle on the charts.

I hate those peanut workers in Halfords, London, Tottenham. Just their attitute to the customers says everything. Not useful to consult about anything...

New gearbox oil won't make any real difference better for the gearbox though.
