Oil Change!

I think I need to change my oil sometime soon.. dunno what to get though - Was going to get some Magnetec but wondered what you guys suggest.

Its a 1.2 1997 (DIET Engine) with 52k on the clock..

Daz.

  Skoda Fabia vRS

just changed mine to Total Quartz 9000 5W-40

mines a 1.4RT 1992 with 91k on the clock

just took it out for a spin and it seems really good, better than what i had in before (15W-50 but i buggered it up with an additive)

id go for that if i was you, others which i can also recommend are Silkolene, Mobil 1

How much is that stuff and wheres the best place to get it?

Is 5W-40 the right stuff for mine too?

I would have thought the advantages of such oils like magnatek where they protect the engine would be lost on higher milage vehicles as any wear would already have been caused. Maybe future wear would be minimised by using this now though?

I tend to go to national tyres very 5 or 6k and get them to use Duckhams semi-synthetic and change the filter for 15 quid with the voucher you get in daily papers. Cheaper and less hassle than doing it yourself.

  Skoda Fabia vRS

a lot of the advantage is lost yea, but i need my car to last until ive saved up enough for an engine conversion, so only the best will do

Daz if you want some of that Total i have used, i can get you some a lot cheaper than from the shops, but you might be very far away and postage might cost a bit, pm me an ill try an sort somethin out

the grade will be in the book, however mine states 15W-50, and this 5W-40 seems perfectly fine, in fact its better, esp on starts !.......flows a lot quicker with it being a 5W

when my car was made they didnt have the advanced oils they have today

how much is that total quartz then? i got magnatec in at the mo, but if you reccomend the total over it i may as well give it a try!

  Skoda Fabia vRS

my RT didnt like Magnatec, but others seem to love it

anywayz, pm me about oil, price depends on quantity

Or about 20 quid for buying the oil yourself, fiver for the filter, hassle of draining the old and pouring in the new. Major hassle in trying to actually remove/refit the filter if you have big hands.

£15 a bargain for this, would cost me nearly twice as much in money plus getting myself dirty for the privelidge of doing it myself. Vouchers for national tyres usually in sun/mirror most days.

So you pay £15 and you get your oil changed? Everything included? Oil/Filter the lot?!?!?

Hmm, is this run normally if you dont have vouchers? Like, for £20 or something? We do have the Sun though.. Let me go and look!

From a very lazy Daz.

National Tyres charge probably 10 or 15 quid more without the voucher so worth getting one out of the paper. Definately in towards the weekend (thurs to sat) papers.

Filter is included and its worth booking your car in 1st just in case they dont have the filter in stock. £10 gets normal Duckhams hypergrade change and £15 gets QXR which is their semi synthetic stuff.

Cant go wrong at this price and even get it done more regularly which can only be good to have cleaner oil.

Matty - yea, Id probably do it a lot more regularly for that price - its insane.. guess where Ill be going sometime! :)

I guess I should get the Semi-Synthetic stuff?

Daz.

definitely, dont be stickin any mineral in !

i still reckon u shud go for fully synth tho mate......

Yea, but, if it saves me getting dirty.. :)

For £15, Id probably do it a lot more often too, like I should do!

Daz.

I would have got fully synth if they did it but doubt big places get much call for it. You should see the size of the barrels the stuff comes out of. The semi synth is a nice green colour which is probably a good indicator as the blacker it gets the older or dirtier it is (i guess).

Place I got my car serviced at first time said that fully synth is only good for modern engines like zetecs etc. Clio bottom end is quite an old one so fully syth may be to thin. I know nothing about oils but Haynes say use normal or semi. Semi probably better.

  Skoda Fabia vRS

Duckhams dont do a fully synth thats why they dont do it, its cheap oil which is why they can do it so cheaply

THIN !

/begin rant

thin thin thin, this is said loads about synthetic oils, right, it IS thinner than other oil but only at start up, which is a GOOD THING, it flows faster giving you protection straight away, GOOD THING !.....the reason you dont see semis as thin as synthetics is that they cant make one to flow that good without it being a fully synthetic !

once your warmed up, the synthetic is the same thickness as any other semi/mineral........as long as there the same rating obviously, like 40

/end rant

  Skoda Fabia vRS

yea, i totally agree mate !

did mine today an all i got was an oily thumb though, worn some old washin up gloves hehe

  Clio 190bhp Hybrid

Yeah thin/thick means nothing to me. Too thin was the reason I was told not to use fully sythetic but I will do at some point. Have 2 lots of Mobil Motorsport but at the mo still prefer to pay 15 quid and get it all done.

As to cost, the oil is the same that costs you or I 20 quid for 5 litres but they buy it by the barrel full hence cheaper to them. Doesnt mean its crap though as Haynes say use Duckhams but then there is probably money involved there. For the cost of it I would rather do this say every 4 k than have to do it myself with more mess and expense every 6k or so.

Oh, thats not bad.. I think this is something I need to ring round about - looks like they all do it!

Kwik fit are scaremongeres, you book your car in for something and then try to sell you loads of other gear, to people who are not car minded they end up spending a fortune. I just ask for what i want there and then leave as soon as the work is done.

  Revels Mum & Sister

Tescos (Near me not sure elsewhere, would imagine so) are doing Mobil 1 4 litres for £16.99.

Not bad at all. Bought some last nite.

Thought youmguys might want to know!!

How do you flush the engine out first though ?. I was told by the people at National tyres they didnt have a filter in for me and couldnt top the oil up as they didnt know what oil was in my car and the two would curdle.

didnt have the filer means - couldnlt be bothered!

what size is the square sump plug? i thoguth it was 10mm but on re thinking i believe this might be wrong, Brun you must know this.

  Was a Clio 1.8 16v

So everyone uses 15W-50 in their 16v. Ive jus put 15W-40 GTX Magnatex in her.

Whats the 40 stand for and does it really make a difference?

  Skoda Fabia vRS

40 is the hot rating......an indicator of its viscosity at high temps and its ability to cope in extreme conditions

50 is for the track though in my opinion..........even the likes of Porsche dont specify a 50 in there engines, in fact i dont think ive ever seen a 50 Porsche approved oil, they all seem to be 0W-40/5W-40

a ?W-40 will be fine, in my opinion go for a fully synthetic 5W-40

oh an pretty sure its 8mm lofty

do you not have to flush the engine out before putting different oil in or will just draing it be ok ? Ive got semi in mine at the moment and want to go to fully synthetic, will mixing it matter ?

just spoke to my local kwik fit, all in £26 for semi synth and £34 for fully.

BRUN im gonna want the FULLY SYNTH arnt i?

Cheers

Dan

  Skoda Fabia vRS

with a Cup, you definitely want fully, you just spend loads on a new car, look after it !

oils will mix fine, you dont have to flush

Mikey....15W-50 is specified afaik, but when the Clio was made they didnt have the advanced oils they have today, trust me, give a 5W-40 a try and you will no longer be sat waiting for the car to warm up, give it a few seconds an your ready to go

it has a lower viscosity at 0 deg, so yes its thinner, but at working temps its the same as most other oils put simply.

In teh end, a 15w or a 5e wont make a huge diff except for when you start up. But thin oil doent cling as well, a thinner base is not as stable as thicker one at high temps....

but it really wont make a diff, as at normal temps its all the same VI.

oil at the end is oil.....just get what you like. Mobil 1 and mobil 1 sport will be near enough identical, and you wont be able to feel a diff when its being used.

  Scirocco GT TSi DSG

Agree with Brun my car takes no time at all to warm up and after changing the oil to 5w 40 fully synth I no longer get the nervousness that I used to have for the first mile. It is smooth from the start.

BRUN where can I get more Silkolene Pro 5w 40 as my car is coming up to 6,000 miles and I want to do an oil change.

Thanks
