Oil Change!

  Was a Clio 1.8 16v

5W may give you a smoother tick-over when starting but is it as protective as 15W and why would 15W be recommended if 5W was safer?

even 15W pour point is still -33 deg F!!!!!

With all oils, after about an hr, there is no oil in any of the galleys and its all sitting in the filter and sump, so your pumping it up from there.

i really dont worry too much about it, oil pressure is up to drivable levels after 2 or 3 seconds. and basically, your safe to drive as normal after 30 seconds.

what about ragging the balls off it straight off? I always try to warm my car up for at least 5 mins if its less than say 10 degrees, as i only do short journeys and im usually late (aka speeding). I like to see my oil pressure at 3 bar at idle before i set off and usually try to take it easy till its at least 60 degrees.

lots of short trips where the egine doesnt get fully hot can lead to deposit formation which is what damages the engine. Acids can also form which corrode internal surfaces. Gettig it HOT is whats needed.......if thats done, then you wont have any problems with.

Ragging it from cold, well......within reason, my fezzy is gin strong after 20yrs on its original bottom end, on 15w-40 with about 1:4th modil synthetic in it....not a problem. startups are rough but thats cause of the setup im running. After it stops the rough idle.....i can happily drive it like normal.

Agree with Brun my car takes no time at all to warm up and after changing the oil to 5w 40 fully synth I no longer get the nervousness that I used to have for the first mile. It is smooth from the start.

BRUN where can I get more Silkolene Pro 5w 40 as my car is coming up to 6,000 miles and I want to do an oil change.

Thanks

and Ben....come mate thats just the pour point, all it means is that the oil still moves at that temp hehe !

yup, but indicates that its STILL MOVING at that temp!!! and thats frikking cold!

Problem is Brun, you get far too excitied over oil and tend to use the newest fanciest "off brand" u can get. 5w is the stuff that super tight tolerance modern cars run on, our cars just dont need it at all! use what your engine needs and wants, not what is the most advanced and best.

yea but once up to temp mate there all the same

at start up my car now runs VERY well, a hell of a lot better than before, it drives like its warmed up already, even in this weather !

well the pour point diff between 15w50 and 5w30 mobil 1 is only 10 deg F......made a mistake, 15w is -55F

15w has a better VI and thus rate of change, is of a heavier base, less VI improovers although the improovers used in synth arent aywhere near as bad as the ones in mineral......

useless debate though, oil in its essence is oil
