oil filter ahhhhhhhhhh?

Hello people, does anyone know how to get the oil filter out of a 1.8 16v clio and put the new one in. its getting on my nerves now, you can just about touch the dam thing.

If it's anything like my 172 it's a pain in teh arse mate and that's all I can say! I ended up hammering a screwdriver through mine to use as a wrench BUT I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND IT to anyone else.

Someone mentioned to me a "Claw" tool you can buy to get these things off. May be worth investigating.

Use a strap-wrench, wrap it round the filter and it will be sufficient to lever it off, and without peircing it.
 
Get one of those bike chain thingies from Halfords etc there ony a few quid well worth it the job isn't any easier. Its not recomended that you stick a screddriver though them as you can break bit of the filters which will end up in the engine. I know many new 1.8 and Williams had to have them screddrivered out though when they were new as the French stuck them on to hard and they've not all died but one of those chain type things is the best idea.
Ps you'll have fun trying to get a new one in there though.

I took the bonnet off pulled the raidiator forward a bit then stuck my hand past the alternator(?) and got it off that way... cut my hand to sh*t though and getting the new one on is a pain in the ass!

To take off the filter simply pierce it with a screwdriver and use that to unscrew.

Fit new one through feeling where it should go and then use one of the tools you can but from Halfords to clamp and tighten it securely.

Its not a nice job and I have to do mine in the next week as oil change is due.

National Tyres offer a 20 quid sevice to drain old oil, fit new filter and fill to max with Duckhams QXR semi synthetic. You can't do that yourself for 20 quid and no hassle.

Only trouble is my local one in Coventry is now refusing to do it because they always orser wrong filters (even though I used to point out which one it was myself) and after fitting one which later fell off the car they refuse to do Clio's anymore. Just show's their incompetence but I used to get mine done OK.

I did it the old fassion way.... carefully tap a screw driver through it with a hammer and that should give you enough leverage to twist it off lol

It was put on way too tight :(

little dome shaped thing down the front of the engine bay under the fuel rail guard. keep looking down and to the left you cant miss it.

NEVER EVER EVER punch a screw driver through the filter!!! dumbest idea ever!!

you don't have to super tighten the new filter, oil the sealing ring before you fit it, and once it begins to bite 1/4 of a turn is enough

Well it was the only way it was coming off in my case.
This is why I change my own oil and filters to make sure they're not jammed on by some over paid tire kicker...

Filter should only be hand tight btw
 
Most of you lot don't have a clue lol

Only way i found was up fron underneath, its almost impossible getting the chain one in there, its hard enough on a normal car, every one i've done have been quite loose and can be un doe by hand, think you can just about get a hand in down by the driver's headlight

thats what i used, but mine is only a 1.2. dont know what its like on a valver

lunner, the second time i changed mine i did it from underneath by hand, that wqas awkward enough, never mind with that wrench thing. id reccomend trying to loosen it by hand first

those who suggest the chain type remover, have you ever actually used one on a valver?.......because there wasnt a chance in hell i was getting mine off with one of those, or the strap kind, ive got both

ive now got filter pliers which is what my local mechanic used last time he did it for me when i gave up, got em off Ebay

I used a leather strap first time i changed the oil on the 182. No it is hand tight and easy to remove

Glad to hear I'm not the only idiot to have used the hammer and screwdriver technique.

Not sure I'd bother doing it myself again - it was a pain in the arse - next time I'll pay someone to do it.

And for reference, I can catagoricaly say that a chain type tool will NOT do the job. Getting the chain around the filter is near impossible, locking it in place IS impossible and even if you did, there's no room for leverage once it's on.

This is the way I always change the filter on my valver, what problems is it likely to cause?

well if a bit breaks off from inside the filter what happens??? you run the risk of buggering your engine IMO

the screw driver method is a bodge, for the sake of £10 for the correct tool, its not worth risking it, do it properly or not at all and all that!!

^^ Correct, I'm gonna invest in said Oil Filter Pliers. Just done a quick search on Ebay and they're cheap and probably very useful for other jobs too.

I see what you are saying, But I have tried the chain tools, straps and the plate that bolts on the end, but on the valver you just ent got enough room to get them in!
Maybe thease pliers are better???????
