Oil smell in 16v.

  Was a Clio 1.8 16v

Not engine oil but more like lubricant oil when at high speeds or given a bit of grieve. I thought is was the warm clucth but a mate reckons its probably oil burning on a hot water pipe or something.

Any1 elses the same? Any thoughts? Cheers.

I think damo16vs got it. Yeah a plastic gaurd near the sump plug has oil on it on my 16v. The mechanic said i may have a leak but i said as u have that it dont leave puddles or use a massive amount of oil!

RobRTE or any other expert know of this common fault? Cheers.

Taht plastic gaurd covers the gear linkage on gearbox, it pops off by hand and will be full of oil, you got a box leak, mine does it and its very hard to suss where exately it is coming from, check the level in your box

If it needs some welding or sealant shall i take it to a normal garage or will Reno mechanics be in-tune with the problem if it is fairly common?

I cant afford a new box right now! :(

Mikey, being the lazy bugger that I am, I havent fixed it, in fact not entirely sure where its coming from, I am pretty sure it aint driveshaft seals, so cant really suss where, although I havent looked very hard. They are dead easy to top up and the oil is fairly cheap, so I am just doing that and topping it up, once a month or so. My box has a wee whine in third but is sound otherwise, but am keeping an eye out for another, If you discover where your box is leaking from let us know, otherwise wouldnt worry about it, just dont let it run dry
