Oil Sump

Right i no a little but not a lot about engines,

Moved my car the other day (off the road at the mo) and there was a wet pacth below, not soaked but damp so i took a look under the engine and from what i could see it looked like the oil sump on the bottom of the car was wet now im thinking it could be a oil leek dont think its water as the water bottle is still full.

any help appreciated.

Smell it !! Coolant usually smells sweet and oil smells horrible !! also water it down and see if you get the multicolours in it !!

Well touch the stuff leaking out, if its oil coloured, ie dark/black and slippery then its oil.

Had the same prob not too long ago, the monkeys that serviced my car didnt replace the drian washer - whihc is a hollow ring that gets flattened when you do the drain plug up, so mine was leaking oil.

Had to change the oil and then replace the washer wiht a nice new one, only cost me 64p for 6 of them from Renault

The thing is the water pump is right on the sump and if this leeks it will run down the sump !! If the sump is leaking the most common place this will leak will be from the washer !!

u cant tell if its oil or water?

1.4 energy engine.commen leaks are from the headgasket and rocker cover gasket.has the sump corroded through?

didnt get chance to use the digicam last night,

Cant tell if its oil or water because its just damp not dripping (although it must do at somepoint) so if i touched it with my finger i just got mostly crud from the underneath of the engine couldnt tell then, ill try get a proper pic up tonight if i can find my digi cam!!!
