oil temp gauge sticking

  182

From when i bought the car my oil temp gauge didnt work so i took it to my local garage and they checked things and said the dial needed replacing.

Anyway they said they spoke to a renault engineer and they told them when they replace a gauge they also replace a switch aswell. But my local garage said that my switch doesnt need replacing it was just the dial so i booked it in to get it done.

Now since having it replaced about 4 - 5 months ago it has been working fine up until the other day.

When the car has been running for quit a while and the gauge is at its normal operating temp as soon as i turn the engine off and the dials start to drop the gauge only falls a fraction of the way down then stops half way and i have to tap the panel to temp the needle to drop fully.

Shorly the dial doesnt need replacing again?? or could it be that switch i heard about?? At least it works up until this point which is more than it used to do.

Rob.

p.s It doesnt do it all the time most times it works fine it just these last couple of days its done it once or twice.........

The oil gauge is electronically controlled, therefore when the ignition is turned off the gauge should return to zero.

If the gauge is sticking (mechanical gauge) then I suspect the gauge is the faulty part not the switch. Also, if you BANG the dash and it returns, you have just confirmed your own diagnosis.

Hope that helps.

Yeah mine does that too... On the way up... Have to tap it a couple of times... I think its the plastic panel being too tight on the gauge that causes it to stick.

I only had it replaced a few months back though, surely it wouldnt need replacing again??? Neil petrol thats excatly what mine used to do so i had it replaced........

I spose its gonna have to go back to the garage again!!!!!!:(

Mybe when they replaced the switch it all started working fine and didnt replace the gauge...(but charged you for it)

I have the same problem but on my fuel gauge! It goes up when I fill up but gets stuck on its way down-catches me out all the time, luckly the light still works on a seperate circuit, but this doesnt give me much time to find a filling station. gonna have a tinker with it to see if can get it working.
