oil warning and stop light on

  Ph2 Flamer
Some advice on this much appreciated.
Saturday driving in the pissing rain and oil warning light came on. Then after a few miles went off again. Check at start up on the trip computer thing which showed all ooo's which means full. Drove it again in the dry and no lights so read a couple of threads on here and thought it might be the oil sensor which lives by the dipstick (car is a 51 plate with 80000 on the clock)
Just took it out now and both the little oil can and the stop light were lit. Checked the dip stick and theres plenty of oil in there but chucked some more in for good measure. Have done about 20 miles and engine temp is normal, engine is pulling as normal etc.

Any thoughts? Could this be down to the oil pressure sensor giving up the ghost? If it was something wrong with the oil pressure what symptoms would I expect (other than the lights)?

Was it flashing "_ _ _ _ _ _" on the display? Most likely the level check sensor or the circuit wiring at fault causing your warning light issues. You're right to check the dipstick but the level check is a usefull feature. If however, when the car is on a level surface and the dipstick says the level is spot on, don't over fill the motor!

I've got a video somewhere of what happens when you do (I had one customer over-fill her Focus with +4 litres and it smoked like a steam train)

Cheers mate, no nothing flashing at all. Just held the reset stalk down when turning the ignition on. Oil ok popped up as normal and then on holding down the reset it brings up the oil status thing which showed the oil as full.
I probably do have a bit too much oil in there now, no smoke though.
Up at JMS on Wednesday getting the aircon removed so will see if they can take a look.

On the same point, what would I be seeing if this actually is a loss of oil pressure? Would the engine temp go up?

Well the oil pressure and stop lights came on again this morning so decided to run it into the dealership at lunchtime but after a couple of miles the lights went off then on again and then off and stayed off for about another 8miles until I stopped. Feels like a dodgy sensor to me, if the pump had failed i wouldn't have thought it would suddenly come to life again.... so will hang on till I get to JMS tomorrow and they can confirm one way or the other.
