Being a teenager in the 90s, XR3i's, RS Turbo's & Cosworth's were all over the place,
so I never really cared about them, even when I was sitting in the back of my mates XR3i.

But recently i've been seeing all sort of old Fords about and ive just realised how cool they actually are.

I'd have almost the whole Escort section on PH tbh,
but this one caught my eye because it's a bit different.

Perfect RS Turbo dog carrier. :approve: £2300

I won't go waxing lyrical about Fords again but there are unlike any other manufacturer.

Even when they're s**t they're still utterly awesone!

I love old fords, there is just something about them! They all smell of Vanilla magic trees inside as well for some strange reason.

The combi above looks really nice.

That's pretty uninteresting to me personally tbh.

Lotus cortina or a mk1 Mexico is more my idea of a cool old ford

Golden rule for a cool ford = not fwd

The bloke next door to my unit has a mk3 escort van rolling shell with a Sierra floor pan. Virtually mint with all the doors and bumpers etc. Very tempting to buy it off him as he only wants silly money for it.

Go on then, name a fwd ford even a quarter as cool as a lotus cortina or a cossied mk1 escort.

Ah a change of question to suit your argument. To be a cool Ford it has to be non Fwd?

So untrue.

You've seen Wennys van I take it? (google "royal nail van" if not) Pretty amusing stuff!

No change at all, I said name a fwd ford that is even as quarter as cool as the best of the rwd ones, how is that a change of question?

RS1600i is about the closest any of them get, and even those I wouldnt ever excuse them of actaully being cool in anything like the way a decent tina or mk1/mk2 scort is.

Its all about rwd with old skool fords.

This is wrong. You know it I know it.

how is it wrong?

I am pretty familiar IMHO with more or less every type of performance ford ever sold in this country and I cant think of a single genuinely cool fwd one.

Seriously what is there FWD thats even vaguely old skool cool?

I kind of like mk1 xr2s and rs1600is and even at a push a series 1 rs turbo, but even as a bit of a fan of these cars I just wouldnt put them in the same league as a mk1 tina or scort, and I dont know anyone into old fords who would either.

Some of the stuff people build is kind of cool, like for example I really liked Mike from MWM's 300bhp connect van as a sleeper, and some of the other heavily modified stuff, but what is even vaguely in the same ballpark as the old rwd stuff?

I would also add you didn't even say old school to start you said cool.

A Mk1 Fiesta is cool. It just is. A Mk2 Xr2i is a cool old school Ford. A series 1 Escort RST is old school cool.

This isn't cool?

the thread is specifically about old fords, but TBH there isnt any modern fwd ford I think is cool in the way a mk1 tina or mk1 scort is either anyway even if you take away the age implications.

I really dont agree with that TBH, certainly not to the same extent as a tina or mk1 escort.

Not to me no, its just an old fiesta with nothing massively going for it, sure its got a bit of character that makes it more interesting than a lot of other cars of the same era, but park it next to a mk1 mexico and it would be utterly no comparison for me.

To me cars are cool because of their dynamics when you drive them as well as what they look like, and I just know that I wont have anywhere near as much fun pulling out of my local ford meet in a mk1 fiesta as I would even in my 3 door, let alone in a decent mk1 escort.

Old skool fords should be all about that rear end shimmy to me, fwd just doesnt cut it at all and never will!

Imo Escort Cosworth's drive like a pile of crap doesn't make them uncool, your logic is totally void.

Cool Ford's have never been about them being good! They've had more bad ones than good ones! It's cool because of what it is.

OT i'd blow my own Dad for this...

I think that "laugh" is what is complete missing from any of the fwd fords.

Here is a fella doing not even 10mph in his lotus cortina and yet having an epic time, what are you going to do in an xr2 to have a laugh, a handbrake turn through mcdonalds? lol

Tbf that is just an opinion Chip. I know where you're coming from though, RWD old Fords are super cool but I also believe that the fiesta is too. There's a huge following for both FWD and RWD fords.

Yeah it is.

I wouldn't call myself a Ford fanboy but there IS something about them. The only way I can figure it out is that they're a bit like the muscle cars were in America - They were desirable but affordable to your average Joe. They were the car you lusted after as a kid but you also saw them round regularly and were the kind of car your Dad or your mates Dad might have. It's funny, I was perusing a few old Escorts on PH while at work - By the end, I had about half a dozen lads stood behind me ooohing and ahhhing at every one. Most weren't even petrolheads but they appreciated them nevertheless.

Having said all that, I don't actually like the OP's Escort van.

They are cool because of what they represent in terms of sticking 2 fingers up to the world and being covered in spoilers that they needed in rallying etc.

I wouldnt say they arent fun to drive though, standard one in the wet, or a decent power one is actually quite a lively car and I enjoy driving them, although not as much as my rwd 3 door obviously.

Cool Ford's have never been about them being good! They've had more bad ones than good ones! It's cool because of what it is.

Its not about being "good" its about being fun to drive, thats what the old skool ford scene is all about to me. Mk1 escort is, Mk1 fiesta isnt.
Maybe its my age, but to me 1 mk1 fiesta looks to me now like a saxo will till most people on here in 15 years time, nice enough but nothing "special" about it.

Mk1 escorts have SOUL to me, mk1 fiestas dont.

OT i'd blow my own Dad for this...

That does nothing for me TBH, just an old fiesta thats been lowered too much on some pleasant wheels.

I know a LOT of people into fords (been going to shows and local meets for ford cars for over a decade and have written for ford magazines as well etc) and TBH the harsh reality is that at LEAST 90% of the people I have met who have a nice mk1 or mk2 fiesta, would swap it in a heartbeat for a mk1/mk2 escort instead, they just have the fiesta cause they dont have the means to own the escort. There are some exceptions, but not many.

Lols! A Mk1 Fiesta is today like a Saxo will be in 15 years time? You really just said that didn't you?

Yeah I can see 50 year old men polishing their Saxo Vts on the weekends whilst trailering them to shows in 15 years time, there won't be any saxos in 15 years time!

Your opinion is simply mental Chip.

You couldn't buy half a decent Mk1 Xr2 for the price of the best Saxo ever made!

I know what your experience in the Ford world Chip lol

Most older fords are worth more than the newer fwd fords so of course most owners would swap as you say. It doesn't stop the fwd ones being properly cool cars too imo.

I said it looks TO ME like a saxo will to people on here in 15 years time yes as I think thats true.
In 15 years time at french car show there will be some middleaged person polishing a saxo and a load of yoofs thinking its a cool old skool car, and most of the people on this forum now if they were there would be thinking "wow, that saxo is really tidy, he's doing a good job of keeping it looking nice, you dont see many of them about anymore, still not really a cool car though" and that is EXACTLY what a mk1 fiesta is to me personally.

Fords hold their value well, but if you are talking value, 50K doesnt get you the better examples of a mk1 escort. although to me being cool for an old car is about more than just cost anyway, its about having something significant that modern cars dont.

In 15 years a saxo will actually have that, but only to a small extent, and in the same way a mk1 fiesta has that (its rawness) to a small extent, but drive a decent Mk1 escort and its TOTALLY different to a modern car, and its that difference in how they feel to drive that really makes the difference to me in how much cooler they are.

What rubbish! Any front wheel drive 80's ford, lower it with a cheap spring kit and go round a wet roundabout just 2mph too fast. I've never worked the controls so hard in my life. Fun isn't the issue. Snobbery is the issue. People can keep emptying their deep pockets into old RWD escorts while the rest of us have cash to spare enjoying the FWD options and getting complimented by everyone else but the purists.

This attitude is why the good condition 80's FWD fords are getting thin on the ground and some parts are getting like hens teeth.
