Old people driving Clio sports

  clio 200 /08 subaru
MK1 escort, want!
the car was as far as i know the only mk1 built with a 2 ltr alfa twin cam and 5 speed alfa gearbox
modded to 240 bhp approx
my first rally car, used in the scottish forest rally championship back in the late 1970
this car was quick for the period, and i learnt very quickly how to get into trouble in the slippery forests of scotia
if you are interested i will post up more piccs of my cars

  Renault clio 1.2
Yes it is a good car but with all the capabilitys of the clio sports and then to do 20mph on a 50 road? abit stupid if you ask me, there are plenty of nice cars on the market for the older generation that are cost effective and run brilliantly, i dont have anything against old people driving clio sports but at the end of the day why buy such a capable car and not take advantage of it, And then there is the issue of how old is old? my dad is nearly 60 but yet he probablly has got more speeding tickets in the last 2 years then most of us put togeather. So in the end everyone has the right to drive a fast car no matter what age you are but it seems annoying when they dont take advantage of it.

  2002 Clio 172
I was in k-tec the other week and there was a chap well in his 50's looked like a city banker type, having his cup serviced.... Can't fault him. if I won the lotto, my shopping list would be epic. But I'd keep my 172. Why? Because it is a ridiculous amount of fun. The end!

  Cup'd artic blue 182
like someone posted earlier, once a petrol head always a petrol head, i'm 47 had 2.8i capri, 5 gt turbo, 309 gti, golf gti when i was a lad, drifted into a couple of boring cars then saw the light and felt the need for a 182 as an anidote to the diesel family car, chuffing luv it.

  Clio RS 172 /Trafic
I bought my 172 after having a Fiat Cinquecento Abarth for a couple of years which was fun to drive but nowhere near as fast as the Clio and didn't handle anywhere near as well either. I sold the Fiat and bought a Citroen Xsara 1.6 hatchback. It was one of the worst cars I've ever owned. The build quality was diabolical unlike previous Citroens I've owned and enjoyed. I was desperate to get rid of the Xsara so asked a friend of mine who used to work at Renault in france and has had several 172's and V6 Ph1 Clios what he would recommend buying if i wanted sopmething fairly cheap to buy and lots of fun. His answer was the 172 so I set about finding one and stumbled across the one I now have on Autotrader. The first few months were a bit fraught with various things breaking like the exhaust and needing a complete set of tyres and rear brakes etc., but its been so rewarding to drive both on the road and on trackdays. I don't intend selling it unless I find another one to replace it. I'd love a Megane 225 as well but thats going to have to wait a while.

It's because RS clios are quite boring, comfy & civilised cars if you want them to be ;)

Just to add to this thread, today I met a lovely old lady called Shirley and she's the very proud owner of this little beauty

She's owned it for 18 years, bought it with 5k on the clock in 1993, sorry to disappoint the geeks but it's only a 92 it's now on 113k

Shortly after buying it she went on a driving course at Silverstone so she could learn to handle the power & drive it properly

From 1998 to 2003 she had it kept & maintained in dry storage while she lived on some Greek island

The drivers rear arch & sill have gone but it's booked in to get it sorted in 2 weeks time

  itb'd RB 182 cup
My aunt is in her 60s and she recently sold her rb182 to by a brand new bg200 cup, which she drives like a complete nutjob. I think in some wqys its good having old people drive rs's as when you come to buy the car you know its not been thrashed. The only downside is the interior will stink to high heaven of moth balls and denturefix !

  172 mk2 Iceberg
Older people probably looking at young folk in clio sports and wondering - why dont they go out and buy a proper sports car instead of running around in old biddy style hatchbacks

classic Daz.....

My father got his 182 for his 70th birthday and has had it for 6 years now

  clio 200
My bro 182harry got his BG182 off an old boy with only 7k on the clock and had been serviced 6 times. I think some of the old people are just had by the salesmen surely.

  Disastra Coupe
Don't see why older people can't enjoy car's. You say a woman in her 50's in one... My Uncle is in his 50's and has a KTM RC8R (fast bike for those who aren't into bikes)... You saying he shouldn't own that? Lol.

As for the comment's about younger people, i'm 23 and look about 18/19 lol. So sometimes it's just a case of the driver looks younger than they are. I'd guess insurance is pretty hefty at 19.

  260% JCW
When i bought mine some old boy had been driving it since new, he was disabled and the car was registered as tax exempt. He sold it because the car had been sat up for a few months and he could no longer drive

  Westy. MX5
I've met plenty of 50 plusers that are in to motorsport and trackdays, including myself. It does help having more disposable income and cheap insurance I guess. I have no time for youngsters who think they are Macho drivers, hang around Mc.D's, can't see out their windows due to over tinting and want to race anything else on the road.
Long live the senior driver who knows how to drive sensibly on the road and let he aggression out on track.

To all you moaners that think older drivers should not be allowed near an RS all I can say is look at your Insurance Premium. I am happy to pay my £245 a year due to being so old. Come on Guys we are allowed to appreciate and use the car for what it is. Saying that older people should be driving sensible safe cars is a bit like we could say all people under 25 should only drive a 1.2 until they learn to drive properly. It's a free country and until I am unable to drive, I will drive whatever car I want to.

  Shit little Yaris...
Several reasons for this...

Anyone can own any car - It's all about cash.

Sales person at dealerships doing what they need to to make a less model sound inferior.

Holding onto Youth feeling.

Personally got no issue with it - because if I see a Litchfield SPec Scooby with 5k on the clock thats 3 years old and driver in his or her 60's and it's mint, I know how it's been treated.

Wonder what the reaction would have been if this thread was entitled "Black people driving Clio sports"

I'm black . What do you think ? and yes i drive a 172, and i'm 57 years old.
Maybe you will say ' They probably climb out of the car wearing a rasta hat and they are followed by a large cloud of Ganja smoke' singing " No woman , No cry ?

My gran who is 80ish loves my Trophy. She wants to drive it, but I've said no chance.

Worried she would kick ass eh ? :)

  Clio 1970000000
Off my road is a house that could use a little tlc. On the drive are 2 cars that spend 95% of their lives under tatty covers and are driven by a bloke that looks at least 60.

Under one cover is the best grey R5 GTT you will see with small tasteful mods. Under the other cover is a Mk1 Clio turbo including roll cage. These cars are lush. Just haven't managed to talk to the guy yet as I casually walk past but am working on it.

I saw an old guy, 40/50ish driving a LY 225... I say I'd rather see an older sensible looking bloke in a sport car than a daft little chav who's parents bought it for them with drug money (kid around town used to have a White evo 8 before he crashed it. Now he has a convertible Beamer with a huge dent in the side from daft driving)

  phase 1 flamer 172
Some missconceptions on here 50/60 isnt old (im 56) 100 is old, and once an enthusiast always an enthusiast, when current i drove modded mg midget, ford anglia, escort mexico, rs2000, dolomite sprint, 205 gti and just sold my phase 1 172 so i can afford to spend some money on my modded mk1 golf.

I've been lucky enough to own several Westfields and a Caterham and to honest most of the owners are older (I felt young at 40ish :)). I think it's great that car enthusiasts come in all different shapes, sizes, colours and age, which imo everyone is better for :D. Variety is the spice of life, and I hope to be driving nice cars well into old age, or at least until I can still afford to put petrol in the tank!

I'm 20 got a 182 last month , brother is 22 bought his Corsa VXR last year, mum has a focus ST and is 48.. My Mum and dad have always had hot hatches so i think the love for them has been passed onto me and my brother.. Just wish any insurance company would cover me to drive them all included in my policy! :dapprove:

  172 cup
My sisters insurance on her 200 goes down with me as a named driver...... At 26 that makes me feel old....... But on the bright side I've got a free 200 cup lol as I've already bagged a key :p

  Clio 172 Phase 1
Seen an old couple plodding along in a brand new clio 200 the other day, don't see a problem with it tbh, at least it won't be getting ragged about, probably getting a lot of bumps and scrapes though haha
