Older persons car insurance

Afternoon all, I know this group is for mainly Clio insurance but I feel many of you will have older (80yo+) parents/grandparents etc that might be able to help.

My Nan (90yo) is due to renew her car insurance in a weeks time. Are there any elderly friendly insurance companies out there that she can phone for a quote? I think £630 is quite steep for a limited mileage policy of only 4000 miles.

I assess her driving quite often. She’s a very confident and competent driver. I’m not just saying that because she’s my Nan either. The small details I’ve pulled her up on she’s taken on board and implemented the necessary changes.

I am with flux and my mrs her insurance doubled when she swapped her Nissan Juke nismo rs for a quashqai 1.3 🤷‍♀️ Beyond me but we will change on renewal as alternative quotes come in at over 400 pound cheaper

I'm not surprised considering how badly driven a lot of Qashqais are tbh

I thought insurance was based on the car and driver ? Have they got a high rating have I missed something as it’s funny how other companies have come in at half the price what they put her premium up too

Unfortunately premiums do rocket for the 80+. Once my mum reached 90 the premium was up to £800 so she ditched the car( not literally) and bought a mobility scooter to do her shopping and visit her mates. She loves it in the summer but not so much in the winter when I do her shopping. If you add up the cost of insurance, tax, mot and other running costs for just running a mile or two round town, it’s not worth it. The savings pay for taxis if she goes further afield but usually I can take her where she wants.

Thing is she used the car to go to my dads every other week which is a 90 mile round trip, don’t think she could do that on a scooter 🤣

But if she doesn't use it (her brain and motor skills) she will lose it, as the saying goes!

If she is safe and drives according to the limits of her care and skills, without impeding or causing risk to anyone else on the road, carry on, I say.

All very true and my mum drove until 88 before the cost was unaffordable, she could have carried on for no more than another year before a reactions would be too slow. It’s something that needs to discussed in the family.

It’s his ex mother in law! To be fair we do travel to her a fair bit but as @White16valver said if she doesn’t use it she will lose it and right now she’s physically and mentally capable.
Luckily money isn’t an issue but she’s old school and doesn’t like paying any than necessary!
