On/Off - Legal/Illegal

Just having a discussion with a friend over a drink who constantly drives round in his VTS with just his fogs on.

Whats the score with the legality of driving with fogs? does it have to actually have to be foggy?

Other people seem to call then "driving lights" is there a specific difference?

I dont usually have them on in the valver but I must admit they do look good with sidelights and of course can see sh*t loads more in the countryside!

  Megane 225 baby! :)

It is illegal to drive around with fog lights on unless the conditions require it - ie its foggy!!!

On the spot fines for people that drive with them on... I would know! Back when I was a bit younger!

police always look for an excuse to pull you over, especially if your car is modified, looks pants as well

if it is not foggy expect a £30 fine and possibly a producer, as it is very much illegal

and looks s**t

i LMFAO when i see people driving about with there fogs on. Its a BMW trend that shouldnt be followed. You might think it looks good, but other people (like me) are laughing at you.

not only that - it can dazzle other road users! ive seen manya motor bike drivers stick there fingers up @ BMW fog light bandits.

Normal people dont drive people carriers........youve got to be strange to have one of those lol!!!!!!!! ;)

Normal people drive hot hatches, and by far the most normal of them all drive Clios........:p Its normal for me...I stick out like a sore thumb amongst the people carriers at the school gates....hahahaha!!!!

Fog lights, only look good in the fog!!!

All the time...

Or at least embarras them at the lights when theyre with their girlfriend

I know a few peeps round my way who drive with their fogs on.....in day light too....

And im thinking, ur my mate.......but u look like a tw*t

Well from a meteorological point of view fog is actually just low cloud. So heres the question. How low does the cloud have to be to make it legal to put on your cloud lights?

Yes officer if you look up youll see a large band of cirrus stratus that i was worried about and thats why i put them on

;)

driving lights come on with your main lights and have no independant switch like fog lights do

as said above fog lights are illegal to be on unless visibility is seriously reduced

Fogs do look cool..which is a reason why magazines have pictures with them on, people follow suit. Im sure it also linked to racing on tele also..when im on track i drive round with full beam! I dont use my fogs though (admittedly i did for a couple of months when i first got my car as i thought i was the daddy!) but now they annoy me..

(Showing my age) ... when I passed my driving test, the rule was that REAR fog lights were only allowed on if visibility was less that 100ft. But wasnt any thing about front fog lights! So 15 years of compressing my brain by cornering too fast means that Im either (a) forgetting what the Highway Code said or (b) the laws changed in that time. Interested to know coz will admit that in certain conditions I do like the sidelights + fogs look on my car!!

I know several people that have got £30 spot fines within the last couple of years for driving with fog / driving lights on.

What makes me laugh are the pr!cks that keep their dipped headlights on AND the fogs lights. The entire point of fog lights is that they are lower down and dont produce as much dazzle from the fog. By keeping the dipped beam on they are acheiving pretty much nothing ... oh, apart from blinding the sh!t out of my retina.

Here are the main three fog light abusers as far as I have noticed;

1) Saxo drivers.

2) Sales Reps.

3) Women (who have been told by their boyfriends that they are in fact driving lights).

Sorry if Im rambling, but improper fog light use really gets up my nose. Just like people who cant manage to get around a big roundabout properly i.e. not filtering as the lane markings suggest .... ARRGGHHH!!!!

That really annoys me! - All Saxo drivers bloody use them! and the worst culprits?! the 1.1 "just go free insurance" boys!

Expect many a C2 to blind you in the near future!

Take it from me, and I am currently a member of the Police:
It is illegal. It is a non-endorsable offence, and will earn you - and justly so - a HORT1 producer and a £30 fine, should you run into a roads policing skills officer and prob if you run into anyone else as well, as (a) it looks sh*t, and (b) it blinds other drivers.

  Mk2 Golf GTI

well if someone has their fogs on behind me i turn my rears on til they get the hint, how annoying!

  Renault Clio 1.8 RSi

turn em off, i got pulled for driving with mine on in the early evening and got away with a producer.

i learnt my lesson, never used em since, except in fog. it really p****s me off now when i see people with em on.

never seen the need to use them in decent driving conditions, yes they light up the road 10ft infront of the car, but you dont drive your car looking 10ft infront of you

as has been said above

expect producer and £30 if you get caught

that is the only warning im going to give you

  CTR EK9 turbo

i think it says in the manual of my car to turn them on if they get fogged up!

my right foglight always steams up and i have to turn them on while im not driving, just packing the car ready for racing/driving somewhere so that the fog can de-fog itself.

I dont really think cars look sh!t (ok maybe if its a cav or something) with them on, but it kinda uncontrolably annoys me if theyre on on another car.

visablity should be reduced to 100m I think. its the f**k wits that drive around at night with their side lights on and their fogs on. fogs give next to no forward light compared to dipped beam. muppets. but then ypour friend owns a saxo.. I think it is in their contract they have to have fog on (during the day too)
