Ooh, new toy, data logging in my 200...

...I had no idea this 'technology' was available so cheaply!

Bought a bluetooth OBD thingy on eBay, downloaded an android app for the Galaxy S, downloaded a demo version of the RaceRender video suite, played on the road for 20 minutes, played on the laptop for an hour and hey presto.

Loads still to learn about this, including sorting out the speed recording which is obviously showing way too high, but the potential is almost limitless.

Haven't really even begun to scratch the surface of it yet...I can't wait to get out on track with this :D

Surely this just shows the police how fast you were going ;) , Do you record with your phone or something else?

Like I said, the speed input file is obviously corrupt, it's reading 10x actual speed, I r SRS.

Filmed with an HD camcorder, data recorded using the android app, brought together with the RaceRender video suite.

Thats pretty good.

Can you give me an 'idiots guide' to doing this please?

Once you've got the hardware you'll just have to have a play around with the software...I've a fair bit of video editing experience, so the only thing I had to get to grips with was working with the data input file settings for each gauge, and then synchronising the data file with the video.

I couldn't even begin to write a simple guide to this..it would be pages long!

Will be interesting to see how well a cheap OBD2 tool works on track. Response time (not just time, consistency) of speed & RPM in particular looks very poor. Presumably this is the "fault" of the android app given the OBD2 reader plugs straight into the CANBUS...

Still it's a bit of fun & if it does increase the fun you have on trackdays then great!

Might take me some time to get to the same point as you then! Does the phone software store the data? As that interests me more than the video side of it...

Yep, stores it as a CSV and you can email it from within the app, email to self, open gmail on laptop, job done.

I think with the full version of the RaceRender software it'll work with the data input file better, plus I haven't really touched the refresh rate of the sampling yet so it is more than a bit jerky.

Once I've got it properly set up it'll be interesting to see how, with the exact same settings, my track work improves (lap times, lateral loads etc.). Regardless it's a new angle on my videos so I'm happy.

How much was the obd adaptor? I've been looking at wifi/bluetooth ones?

£15.45 delivered!
