probably been asked already but here goes,

when repacing a mk1 172 head unit, are there any special features that a potential replacement must have in order to work with the column control?

or are there only a select few

Most these days will work and will tell you if you look at the specs of them.

thanks mate, sorry to sound like a thicky biscuit but will it say...compatible with clio controls or is there a standard remote protocol that they all use for exterio control units?

Is there a name for the specific feature it should have?

ull need an adapter from either autoleads or connect2. bout £50 sony works best as they can be used with stalk and hud display thn, but i believe most other brands can cater for stalk controls.

currently i believe only sony, alpine and kenwood do the leads to get controls to work. for pretty pictures on the stereo, go for a sony. for sound quality go for a alpine, but dont go for a kenwood, there sh*t, just total utter complete sh*t. autoleads should list both adapter codes if you need them.

My Mk1 is a cassete job, with 6 disc under the seat. My last car a mk 2 had a front loading cd as well, personally i find this better as i dont use cassetes and sometimes its far easier just to slip in a cd rather than f*ck about removing the magazine etc!
