  Ph1 track 172
i cant find the exact figures atm so wouldnt give 100%,

But the mk2 ph1 has over the years been nicknamed the mk2 ph-quick because its quicker than all the ph2 models.
i always thought this was because it was lighter, but it may on the otherhand be down to the slightly better shaped airbox, exhaust system and cable throttle.

either way its hands down the most fun the drive, mainly because of the cable throttle tbh (and i have driven a ph1, 172ff and 172 cup)
and its ugliness is part of its charm to me, like the gumpert apollo!

saying all of this, i prefer my F7R powered mk1

172 cup 1011kg
ph1 172 1035kg

very little in it tbh, but i was wrong,

ph1 is still quicker though somehow!

Im thinking some test drives are needed, before I can make an infomed decision.
Thanks to all that posted, & sorry for the" you don't know ya arse from ya elbow"joke.
Why clios?bang for the buck ratio.

also it might be worth mentioning, the ph1 pulls off 1035kg whilst still using the heavy leather seats, (ive heard theyre 15kg a peace heavier)
so if youre planning on running just a pair of bucket seats, and stripping the ***** out of it,

the ph1 will be much lighter than a cup!!

(if you hadnt noticed, i love ph1's!)

oh and kurb weight of a mk1 with full cloth is 978kg ;)
and no worries about the joke, it make me lol :)

172cup gets my vote.

But don't buy one to mod, buy one already track prepd as that will save u alot of money.

  Stripped yozza'd cup
Struggler, the leather seats ARE NOT 15kg heavier than the cup seats. The cup seats are cloth because it's cheap, not because it's light. The ph1 is not any faster than a cup, in actual fact, there's more difference between one ph1 and another than there is between the ph1, ph2, cup, 182 etc etc.

The cup is lighter and doesn't have aircon, so, with an equivalent engine, it will have more bhp/tonne.

To be perfectly honest, there's bugger all between them. The reason I bought a cup is because, if you're planning on stripping the car, you'll be getting rid of seats (so the leather is pointless), air con (because it saps power) and the interior.

The cable throttle does give great response, but the FBW is by no means bad, and that alone is not enough for me to want a ph1.

Have you heard a F4R engine? It makes a Subaru sound like a v12.

  Golf 7R
If it was my money I'd get a 172 cup, but finding a decent one with your budget may be a struggle. So that puts you in phase 1 territory, which isn't a bad thing!

Lols that doesn't make sense.

A tidy ph1 will be in much better condition than a shat early PH2 for the same money.

A lot of people change to different things mate, a good amount on this forum no longer even own Clios, shows how good and well run the site is imo.

A lot change up to vag/jap then relaise the Clio was more fun and they miss it.

if I got a prestine example,it'd be more to devalue.I don't take good care of cars, they all get ruined,& thats just fine, hence I buy dogs.

  Monaco 172 + mk1 RSi
A phase 1 isn't 'hardcore'. A cable throttle doesn't make a car automatically hardcore.

I do agree though, that for £2k, I'd be looking for a ph1. If you could stretch to £2.5k then you're in the running for a nice cup.

It was a joke because I own one, but tbh that's just what I've read on here:)

One of the things Ive noticed on the Autotrader site,is few of the 172 cups don't appear to be what they're being sold as.Does anyone know.or is able to put me in the righr direction to find,Vin numbers of the cup models.I thought the 172 cup was only made in blue & in silver,is that correct?

That is correct, silver is uber rare. Also a few came with AC/Climate control iirc.

A lot of people do put cup in the title. The good thing is if it's a light blue 172 then it's a cup, the 182 got mondial blue which is close but then you would know it's a 182.

I doubt there are many silver ones for sale tbf.

Gally:theres a silver 172 cup with 43k on autotrader for £1999.But its got 5 spoke alloys ,no cup markings on the bodywork at all,& looks to be a bit too high ride height wise.

Shame it 'aint what I want. The cups for that money have 3 times the mileage. But Ive bought cars in the past that wheren't the model I really wanted, and then wished I hadn't the whole time I owned them.

  172 Cup
The 172 cup offers the best 'bang for you buck' imo as they can be had pretty cheap now and like said are a good place to start modifying from so thats what i would go for ;)

What exactly do u want the car for? Day to day driving? Track days? Weekend toy/project?

Clio might not be for u if power (200+bhp) is what you want most..

Not sure about this one, not long until the belts are due.

Something fishy going on with this one

Lots of people seem to advertise a bog standard Ph2 172 as a cup, For me if the person selling the car doesn't know what the f**k they are selling im not bothered about having a look at it.

For me if the person selling the car doesn't know what the f**k they are selling, 9/10 it means that they've underpriced it as well

EFA. Idiots selling cars ftw.

I buy cheap ones normally, that need work doing to them, i then get the work done by someone i trust.

Sod spending all my wonga on one that has had a 'recent cambelt change & service' by my dad's mate's, brother's friend's girfriend's dad's brother, who is a mechanic, part time, at Ford.

For your money you want a PH1 172, or a PH2 172 Cup. To define a Cup have a look at the smaller of the two stickers in the drivers door shut, the 3 letters you are looking for are SPL which means Sport Light. There ar plenty up for sale around £2k. but will need some work, usually brakes and cambelt, if you are handy with the spanners you will save £££££'s. Get the cambelt done by a RS specialist though for £250 max.

YIU If you have people who can do the work then all well and good, there are some bargains out there. Not everyone has a mothers, sister, brothers, great aunty twiced removed mechanic in there back pocket though so id rather buy something where someone else has forked out for the work.

Some proof of where it was done would be ideal, as you said not by any old monkey.
