Opinions on these laptops ?

Yet again another laptop thread.

Has anyone had any dealings with ASUS and know of any sites that give you information on processors so i can work out when they were introduced and how old they are.

Reason is i am looking for a decent spec laptop that ain't that much money so i can take it offshore.

It will be used for watching/storing films, listening/storing to music , internet browsing and general office work.

I have narrowed it down to these.

Iv'e had to return my ASUS laptop 3 times now, They gave me a new one everytime, the keys didn't respond and the mouse pad didn't work sometimes. The current one i have seems better but they are not the best.

First one seems the best spec, it's the only one out of the 5 you have listed that has an i5 processor and 6gb of ram. That would be my choice imo.

I'm not that knowledgeable on processors, but I've been told to go for the best you can in the budget you have got.

The i3 isn't dated, it's the same age as i5 or i7. The iX code refers to the cores it has. i3's have 2, i5's have 4, and i7's have (theoretically) 8. Day to day, you'll be fine with an i3 or i5.

I've got an ASUS, and have found my experiences the complete opposite to Dan's. However, as I have one of their top spec models I can't comment too much on the lower price range laptops, but I'd probably buy another one.

Personal recommendation though would be the first one, since it's the best spec out of the lot.


Oh, and prepare yourself for the wonder that is Windows 8.

personaly I like the sony unit. it should be plenty for everyday use. obviously it depends what u want to do with it day to day. don't worry to much about anything with more then 4GB of RAM as neither windows 7 or 8 will use more then 4 theyre both deisgned to max at 4 as standard. some programs like photoshop etc will run 6+ but 4 is mostly the limit. Windows 8 is amazing though so I would definatly have to recommend it. I Work for Tesco tech support so id have to say ditch currys and pop to ur local Tesco extra

Both the Sonys there are pretty bland. Both lacking RAM and Processor performance.

Also, saying that you can only have 4GB RAM is only true for 32 bit systems (XP, Vista 32 e.t.c.), Windows 7 and 8 should be 64 bit systems and so can theoretically handle up to 16.8 million terabytes of RAM.

I'm not a big laptop/PC need but I recently brought a HP pavilion dv6 dre beats edition. Its Intel i5 processor, cracking but of kit tbh. Never had a problem with it an seems to handle what I use it for really well. Plus its brushed aluminium finish an light up hp logo look cool haha

Windows 8 and no touch is pointless. I ordered that on Thursday at 8pm and it arrived Friday 9am on free super saver delivery. Cracking piece of kit perfectly fine for everyday, may well swap out to an SSD in the future.

I'm swayed towards the i5 Samsung thats why i put it first, but then i seen the Asus touch screen and the Sony Vaio but was unsure how good the processors were :S
Its only a laptop for offshore as i have a Macbook Pro for daily use when home.
It would just be nice to have a windows laptop and a MBP.
And i am always worried the MBP gets damaged travelling
Anyone got any other ideas foranything else for around £450 ish mark ?

for what your needing it for ebay IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T61 and £200-£250 in your pocket.

awesome build quality, one of the best keyboards you will find. Core2Duo still more than up to the job, can upgrade it to 8gb of ram cheap if you needed

however your budget would also stretch to a newer Thinkpad T400 with an LED screen with £100 in your pocket!
