Optimax, PB Ultimate or Tesco 99

  ST on the way...
Is it worth sticking Optimax, PB Ultimate or Tesco 99 in my 1.6 (52reg)?

Would I notice a difference or should I just stick with Tesco 95?

Cheers.

I would'nt of thought it mattered too much in a standard 1.6, if it was me i'd stick with Tesco RON 95. But i'm no expert and i'm sure someone else would tell you different !!

optimax makes a nice difference to my car (1.2 16v with induction kit) pulls through the revs smoother (not faster!) and when you start it when cold it idles much better.

best thing to do is run it right down low when your petrol lights on then try half a tank or so of optimax and see how it goes

only reason i put it in was for the cleaning properties, what ive noticed now is even when cold you can hold the revs totaly steady it used to jump up and down slightly, must just be after a good optimax clean :)

Thankyou for that guys!

The fuel light came on half way to work this morning so i've probably got about 30 miles left in it now, i'll try £20 worth of optimax in it on my way home (might help the idle too, cheers martin)

If you're worried about cleaning then just get a bottle of STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner and be done with it.

Optimax is usually about 5p per litre cheaper than Ultimate. Ultimate is smoother and stays 'on' longer imo but in your engine it probably won't make a huge amount of difference. TBH I wouldn't spend all that money on Ultimate in your car.

Go with what makes you feel happy though.

The last tank of fuel was tesco 95 and I put some Wynns tank and fuel system cleaner in it so.

I know it won't produce any more power than 95 as the engine isn't really set up for it but I just thought it may run better/smoother than supermarket stuff.

I'll give optimax a go and report back anyway.

"Go with what makes you feel happy though" <- I'm not sure it's legal on a petrol station forecourt, lol :)

Well... i've run it for a few days so far on Optimax, torque feels a little better, power no different and MPG worse, i'll give it a few weeks and see what happens...

I tend to run on optimax or tesco 99 - I don't think mine likes Ultimate last time I tried it.

I'd still use super even in a lower power car as it just seems to make everything run smoother!

optimax (98RON) has cleaning properties, i didnt think BP ultimate (97RON) did.

Wrong, in the fuel test EVO magasine did BP Ultimate came out head and shoulders above optimax in terms of cleaning ability, other additives. But Optimax was slightly better for BHP figures i think.

Personally BP Ultimate is the best fuel available for my car, and its nice to know the engine is being looked after. As for your 1.6, i'd use BP Ultimate on every third tank to keep it nice and cleaned, but without the extra overall costing.

Performance wise not much in any of them on Clio RS, but on some cars your looking at a 20bhp (new Golf GTI EVO Test) gain from using higher RON over 95 RON.

what would happen if you put like 120ron petrol in a car? would it screw up the engine? cos you could buy some of the redex stuff (this its plus 3 Ron to 30 liters) and mix it to like 5 liters lol. or btter yet, run it neat lol

I guess it depends if the engine can adapt to that sort of RON, i dont know the spec on it. But technically i guess if it couldn't its going to misfire like a c**t and cause too much ignition.

Putting the odd tank full of optimax in it will do it some good, but I'd stick to the cheap stuff most of the time.....

Theres an article in motorsport news about tesco 99, apparently all the WRC teams are using it this season.

Edit - somet to do with 5.75% biethanol.

no offence intended but what does the handbook say i know 172's etc need high octane as standard but i'd say the 1.6 should just need 95. so save ya money and buy it
