Oulton park Renaultsport Track day Video

  172 Race Car
Great day, such a nice circuit. First time id ever been there, looks totaly different on the telly. Apeared ever so narrow on the sighting laps and very tricky but once you get up to speed it has a real nice flow to it and many different corners. Some are proper quick!

Kerb hoping the first chicane was fun but i HATE the last corner (Lodge) its very difficult to get right.

Fav corners are probably Island and Druids.

Loved the track, probably the best circuit ive driven on so far.

Tony Hunter was sharing my car with me for the day and we had a great time. The car is so much better now (changed to stiffer rear springs) than it was, very well balanced. Deffo need to get some 'proper' tyres for it tho. My pradas have taken a serious pounding.

Anyway here is the vid of some mistakes and some reasonable laps from me and Tony. GPS speedo was an experiment, its a bit slow to update due to a poor signal (heat reflective windscreen?) Gives some idea of the higest speeds on the straights and lowest corner speeds.

from what i was told on my VXR day it looks like your turning in to early, i'm no expert though.

  172 Race Car
yea i thought that when i watched the video. I wasnt doing that earlier in the day im sure. But i went out in a 197cup with an instructor who was teaching me to trail brake into the corner.

I think i was turning in early coz i was scared of running out of road.

Git! When I dragged my ass up there Feb last year, it snowed and was cancelled...haven't been back up since.

Looks like you had great weather, and car seems well too.

Is the last corner hard because the apex is down the 'dip' slightly so you can't see it at entry...hence turning in too early and running out on the exit?

Or is it just one of those corners, that you can picture in your mind what you've got to do...but you get there, and do it wrong, exactly the same time after time after time...?

LOL

Favourited so that I can watch over again before I visit Oulton again.

Mark:

its actually a slower corner than it looks, there doesnt seem to be as much grip as on some other corners, unless you are in a cup racer. (had a passenger ride in one) That was just silly.

As said i was trying to do what the instructor said. was missing the apex all day tho, just going onto the grass later in the day

I turn in much later than you. That was one of the corner I wasn't scared of running out of road as it was slow. I like to brake abit into the corner and the back comes round then just let it go out to the curb.

I just like going sideways more and more. lol

Not as mad as tony. The tyres actually lasted very well on mine with not much wear. Great last outing for the car aswell.

It's not that there's a lack of grip! It's all to do with the weight transfer, because it falls away mid corner the balance of the car is offset. What alot of the guys in the radicals were doing was takin a really deep, wet line and hoofing it out! Was amazing to watch, bizarre but faster.

Great track, although it put me in hospital 4yrs ago! 120mph into a haybail on the double right hander in the wet! :(

Lodge is simple in theory :S (in a Clio):

Very hard on the brakes (so much you feel it's 'too' slow!), late turn-in, get on the power, clip the apex (there used to be two posts on the kerb, the second one was the one to aim for and almost hit), more power...

It'll spit you over to the opposite kerb, which can be taken no probs in the dry, can seem quite daunting due to the gradient - appears to be 'coming up' at you!

Classic 'slow in, fast out' corner.

But, it's one of those that, in practise, doesn't always feel rewarding... :dapprove:

For me the first corner was always the best...So close to being flat out in a kart...5th i think...

I think thats what the instructor was trying to tell me. iirc he said By going in on the brakes lightly there is more weight on the front wheels giving more grip. Definately gonna have some instruction next time. Going out in the 197 was great but in the 10mins i had i didnt even get used to the car so wasnt going to be totaly comfortable with what he wanted me to do.

I need more time in the car, it was only my 3rd time on a proper track. The first being Bedford and 2nd Fcs. Getting more confidant with it each time.

IMO, that's the absolute key to it!

I've been to Oulton before but I still had two 20 minute instruction sessions this time, together with my 10 min RS 'freebie' where I asked the same instructor to drive the 197 so I could watch him demonstrate everything he was advising...

£50-£70 in instruction during a day gets me round any track quicker and smoother than the same amount spent on the car, every time, IMO... :)

Instruction is a good thing esp if your new to track days...Although i heard fred was giving tuition...That would worry me! LOL! ;)

After almost 1,000 track miles so far this year (first year doing track days) I still think instruction is essential to get the most out of the car - and more importantly, IMO, the circuit you're on...

I dont NEED to do anything else to the car really. Some better seats and maybe some proper tyres but afte that its pretty much there.

Just gonna spend my hard earned driving it and being told how to

i spent 35 quid going out with Christian it was invaluable as i had picked up habits of choosing a lower gear than needed when he said stay in third here i replied "i'll be the judge of that". a couple of laps later i obviously was wrong and he was right.
I got more like 40 minutes in total and was worth every penny, i was miles quicker and smoother in the afternoon once i had time to digest all the things i learned.
excellent day deffo going to do it again

Christian D!ck (recent Ginetta G50 race-winner!) was my instructor too, top bloke... What you say Mr Socrates is exactly the point I was making earlier - it makes the 'buzz' of a track day even more intense when you find yourself improving and getting quicker & quicker... :race:

the hardest thing was when he sat there for the first lap just watching, it's quite hard to not be intimidated i was driving like a noob and talking waffle but he was so relaxed and cool that i soon relaxed shut up and found my rhythm. a top chap

Thats not bad laps, I timed the quickest at about 2:12, Allen in his white clio cup racer was doing 1:58 on slicks and thats 2 seconds quicker than the guys do at Oulton in the LMA championship
