Paint advise.........

Quick one lol.

Giving x2 wheels a refurb in the not too distant future lol. As they've had a previous blow over, they are peeling slightly in some areas. I've got some proper Wurth wheel paint that looks spot on colour match wise so thats ok. So i need some advise in the prep/spraying. Firstly as they are only spares, so no tyres will be fitted. Am i right in thinking to rub the wheel down with some say 800 grit wet and dry, consentrating on the flaking areas? Once done clean up/panel wipe etc. Now will i need any primer at this stage???? I'm only keying the surface and sanding out the flaking etc.....? (so imo no need for primer?) Then lightly coat the alloy with 3-4 coats of silver wheel paint (basecoat). Now leave for a few days.... Now here's the bit i'm not sure on. After the silver basecoat, do i need the wet and dry down with say 1200 grit, then laquar???? or just laquar straight on the base coat with no 1200 grit rubdown? :S

Cheers

id probably dry sand the flaking bits out with something like P240/P320

you can wetflat them out with P800//P1000/P1200 but its quicker to use the dry sanding . as for primering, yea id advise primering them if the laquers flaking

you'll probably find it will all peel back if theyre flaking in a few areas, so just get the lot off, primer, basecoat then laquer

you dont need to wetflat basecoats. there is no need at all unless there is a problem with it, like bits of crap in it, or reactions.

if the basecoat is fine, wait til its touch dry, then laquer straight onto it

Mint. Just been reading your guide ;)

So best bet would be to pretty much dry sand down the wheel, primer, 800 grit wet/dry, basecoat, leave it for a few days, then laquer up??

Also what colour primer would you recommend, white or grey?? Its for a standard bright silver wheel paint.

Cheers

well, if you can get the basecoat/laquering done in a day, thatd be better, basecoat will be dry in 20 minutes ready for laquering. with heat you could basecoat then dry it off for 10 minutes n laquer it. the longer you leave it, the more dust its gonna get on it and then really you should wetflat it if youve left it for like a couple of days

either primers fine, id probably go for grey though
