I'm just in the process of making a list of parts on the engine that can be painted and/or powdercoated. Can anyone add to it? The engine will be taken out so i'll be painting the block, head and gearbox. Also what paint types have you used?

Ive just had a few bits done.

Got the gearbox mount done in sliver and the bits around the ECU in black.

There is also the alloy bits around the PAS pump that i will be getting done on mine when the head comes off.

I used Vulcan in Basildon.

My inlets/cam cover will be painted by Chris @ Autocrash (used to be a trader on here)

As Rob said, check my project thread for pics but I have done / am doing the following;

In here, post number 249

http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?612638-Cub-s-Trackday-Flamer-Cage-etc/page5

Powdercoated (cheers @Rob)

- Upper Inlet
- Lower Inlet
- Fuel Rail
- Cambelt / belt cover
- Alternator brackets
- Engine Mount
- Battery Bracket

Sprayed, with VHT (Simoniz) paint;

- Engine Block
- Rocker cover
- Gearbox

In terms of tidying up the bay, I've also;

- Got a MAD battery cover
- New Coolant bottle
- Samco Hoses (full set)
- replaced the manky heavy heatshield with nimbus heatshield
- New jubilee clips
- cleaned the bay
- removed the sound deadening under the bonnet (the risk here is not all bonnets were fully sprayed, lazy Dieppe workers ;))

Mine should all be in and done on the 22nd so can post pictures then.

Cheers Cub, look forward to seeing pics. I'm gonna have a go at painting most of the parts myself, I'm just wondering whether the inlets will be ok to paint with 'normal' spray paint or whether they really have to be done with VHT. I've already bought new black silicon boost hoses and just about to order new jubilee clips, I might even go the full monty and order new silicon coolant hoses. Will also buy a new header tank (mine will be filled with green Type D coolant though ) ;)

It's just a tidy up but willing to spend on parts being powdercoated if need be.

The Powdercoating wasn't too pricey for me luckily - £150 for all the parts you see in my project thread.

The Samco hoses were the pricey element :( But, I thought if I'm doing the job, I might aswell do it properly!

I thought i'd drop these in here for ease, not the best photos but they are give you the idea;

I'd recommend powdercoating, as I was advised, although cheaper to paint yourself, it won't last anywhere near as long and also will be infinitely easier to clean / keep clean.

Yeah but yours is all one colour. Mine would have been cheaper if it was all one colour ;)

Anyway, stuff down here is always more expensive and I'm happy - which is the main thing ;)

Have you sprayed the mating faces on the upper inlet? The throttle body face looks to have been done?

  dan's cast offs.
must be dead posh where you live then;)

different colours don't make any difference to the price, think i'm going to have to dig all my spare bits out, get them coated and flog 'em:D

everything was still masked up when i took the pic

I'm going to buy another rocker cover and get it done/fitted when the belts are due i think. Powder coating is addictive, theres so much more i want to do :(

Chaps, what's the turn around time for these powdercoated parts, from drop off to picking them up?

  dan's cast offs.
Was the rocker cover easy to do?

rocker cover was a bit of a pain to mask it off as it had to be asked first with duct tape for blasting and then with the green tape for the coating.

Which place do you use @bloke ?

I need a few bits doing

jay, i use cheshire powder coaters but i get very good rates and turn around time as i use them a lot and take stuff in all ready to be done, i even mask up for them. the stuff in the pic was dropped off at 11:30 and i collected it at 2:00 same day

Cheers there not that far from me I might give them ago.

Do you shotblast/sandblast them yourselve?

  dan's cast offs.
yup, do all the prep. what do you want doing? it might work out cheaper to go through me?

  dan's cast offs.
They're all sliver.

I'd get the rear ones done first as they are the worst. Same as these:-

I used to do a small amount of powder coating a few years back for a small company on the Wirral our turnaround depending how big the item was was usually 1 working day. Maybe drop off in the morning pick up late afternoon for a good customer.

they did all the bits for my aprilia, mostly in satin black.

Awesome.

Worth me going direct to them with just the 2 items? Shouldn't be that much should it with them being relatively small.

  dan's cast offs.
probably won't be too much, where are you though? i'm taking some stuff in this week to be done in silver so i could chuck them in and would only be a couple of quid.

I'm in Elton mate so I'm not that far away from the Rossmore industrial estate if I'm on the right tracks of where it is.

  dan's cast offs.
yeah, follow the road round and they are on the right just before you hit the new housing estate.

  dan's cast offs.
no worries, would cost you more in petrol to get to me than you would probably save getting me to drop them in for you.

If you need any bits dropping off or picking up from Chris I'm less than 5 minutes from Autocrash, then I'm sure the CS Logistics train can steam into operation to get them to you.

I'm actually due to pop down there this weekend to chat about sorting a few things on the 330i.

My cambelt isn't due for some time yet but I can't wait to get plenty of bits powdercoated while I'm at it, Scott, your stuff in your project thread looks minty mint (like I'd expect anything else). Love it!

Thats very kind of you Tim, however i sent Chris 2 emails with regards to painting my bits but got nothing back.

I gave up waiting, so i sent most of it away for powder coating, the only bits im going to get painted are the inlets, engine cover and the inside grab handles.

I think ive sorted a painter out now for the above, shame as i like chris and his work.

Thanks again mate. :)
