Painting My Wheels?

Hi there, This is my first thread so go easy on me

Ive been looking to paint my standard wheels for a while now, ive got 2 mates that both used Hammerite (smooth) to pain theirs and it doesnt look too bad.

i just dont know how they done it, any advice?

Are they alloys or plastic?

i personally wouldnt paint wheels with hammerite. get them powdercoated, its not expensive and will look a hell of a lot better

no they are alloys.

how much would it be to get them powder coated?

my mate had his motorbike wheels done for £40 for the pair. so id hazard a guess at about £80. they will look like brand new wheels though, its a good finish, id go gun metal on them alloys, looks proper nice

i live in the north of scotland so it would probs cost a bit for P&P, any ideas on a place up this way?

or should i just search the net?

Just use google and search for alloy wheel refurbishment or powdercoating around your area.

The cheapest i found in the NW was £140 car in tyres stripped, filled, powercoated, fitted then balanced.

alright, how long would it take to do 4 wheels do you know?

quite easy to do them yourself mate I did the wheels on my last car.

Sand them back
fill any scratches with chemical metal
sand that back
spray a good few layers of primer
then a good few layers of your colour
and lots of layers of lacquer

I didn't use hammerite just normal rattle cans

Also can i just say... im not looking for an awesome finish because when i get back to work in a few weeks im going to save a bit and start changing the car, so a new set of wheels will be ordered. i just want to play about with these ones just now

Halfrauds primer, spray and lacquer ftw... That's what I'm planning on using if I decide to White my wheels, there's a couple of guides on here, should be interesting to see how it turns out lol

wet flat the primer, dust primer, 2 or 3 coats of colour... dry... good even coats of laquer... done...

Mine took 2 evenings because they where curbed... id say about 6 hours work but i took my time

After you've sprayed on the primer and let it dry, you can use fine sandpaper... i.e. grit 2500, 2000 (can be got anywhere... online... etc) with water and lightly smooth the primer to a very flat surface... (wet flatting)

This means your paint will layer on top smooth and give a good finish... Then dust primer is just a quick spray over (im not sure if necessary) after wet flatting, before colour.

Have a look at some guides and you will understand it more
