PAS Pump - Which Brand?!

  Clio 182
Hi All.

I need to replace the PAS Pump on my Clio 182, but have heard some horror stories about some of the "refurbished" ones.

I want to make every effort to keep the hydraulic steering as I like the feedback I get through it (it's a race car), but also need to make sure I get a replacement pump that is good quality as I can't have it costing me finishes if it lets go.

So far I have seen pumps from; APEC, BGA, Shaftec, and Napa (not sure which brand it really is behind the name).
Obviously, there are then the eBay refurbished ones... who I believe "Steering Specialists Limited" tend to be the go-to?

Any suggestions on which brands are better/more trustworthy than the others?

Cheers.

I got mine off eBay (Steering Specialists Limited) - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251728117418

It's a genuine refurb unit, sold on an exchange basis (for full warranty). I had heard hit-and-miss reviews, but the one they sent me was bang on and the steering has been great since.

I suppose if I was to buy a new one outright I'd avoid the cheaper brands like Nappa, Apec as we distribute some of their parts and they're not the best.

Shaftec are refurbished units as far as I'm aware and i have a couple of their driveshafts which have been spot on.

Meyle are expensive but top quality. TRW-Lucas manufactures calipers, and carriers for Renault so I guess those should be decent.

I have an old pas pump in the garage which i haven't had a proper look at for markings. It might give me a better idea of who makes them for Renault. I'll have a look tonight.

Which series are you racing in?

Thanks mate. Could be a great help!! I race in the CSCC Tin Top series.

After speaking to a few companies, it turns out that they don't have new pumps for a 182 Cup. Must be other versions they're listing. So, looks like refurb is my best bet.
Don't get me wrong, it's not too bad at the moment... No noise unless steering, and even then it's a moderate groan rather than screaming like a supercharger.

I ran the stuff in my new pump and it definitely resisted boiling over compared to cheap stuff.

That's good to hear. I wanted more than a placebo effect given the price tag! Haha.

I imagine the fluid in there has been worked really hard, and don't know the history of replacement. I've only had the car a year and I've never changed it.

There's a guide on here on how to change the fluid by having the engine running and it'll pump the fluid out as you pour new stuff in.
