pc polisher speeds

  Chocolate Bar™
seen a couple of people on detailingworld using a random orbital sander as an alternative to a pc polisher. tbh i would prefer a random orbit sander as it means i can use it as an actual sander as it has alot greater rpm speed. however a pc has a rpm of about 2500-6000. whereas almost all of the random orbit sanders start at 4000rpm.

so is this going to be too fast for machine polishing the car?

u really are getting the detailing bug aint yer lol

on a serious note i rekon you could get away with it, i usually spread the product on speed 2 so if the sanders on its lowest setting for spreading the product the jobs a good un

if you go with a porter cable or a UDM they are much safer for beginners as they spin a bit slower so you are much less likely to burn the paint, the random orbital ones require lots of lubrication and as they spin so fast if you leave it in the same place to long you burn through the top surface of the paint. they should only really be used by experienced detailers, they do have the advantage of being able to complete the job much quicker though

cheeky git!
im just trying to kill 2 birds with one stone lol. the threads ive seen over on DW show them working with the sander almost permanently on its slowest setting. now the cars coming off the road for 3 months gives me some time to detail it ;)

tbh with the exeption of an orbital sander going up to 15,000 rpm cant see any difference. still got a 5mm tolerance on its bearing like a porter cable with soft start.

It's not really just the speed that makes rotarys dangerous in the wrong hands, its the motion type of the head. Random orbitals, like the PC, move in eccentric circles so don't focus the pressure on one area for too long. Rotarys work in a normal circle when spinning so focuses the pressure more, and also means its harder to apply even and equal pressure over a panel, and avoid damaging the paint.

I don't use one myself but I imagine once you master them they must provide quicker results.

  A slow one :-(
What this man said^^^^

I'd only go near my own car (or anyone elses for that matter) with a rotary after I'd worked on several scrap pannels from different manufacturers!

Rotarys appear to be alot quicker and get "better" results but only in the right hands. Work out the costs PC + Rotary Vs getting a pannel resprayed!

You can still damage things with a PC mind!

I'm almost certain that a PC doesn't spin at 2500 - 6000 rpm, could be wrong though as i have never seen specs. I am only experienced with rotary and the absolute maxiumum top speed that you go to is 2000rpm.

So in answer to your question, 4000rom start would be way too much. You need one that starts at about 800 rpm.

tbh i just took the specs off the porter cable website in america. so not 100% positive on that myself.

most of the comments in here are about rotarys, which im not going to buy as most of my paint is so crap it would burn through in seconds. im on about a random orbital polisher, which is a porter cable without the brand name.

might just wait for the reviews to come out regarding the megs machine, but it seems overpriced for what it is.

Wha tdo you mean by your paint is crap?

I think that rotarys are given a bad name for burning through paint and causing damage, which although they are capable of doing, you would have to ignore clear warning signs before burning through paint.

Sorry, I read your post about he random orbit sanders wrong, but still, if they start at 4000rpm, it is still way too fast for machining.
