LOL @ the comment on Brazo's prices - you get what you pay for.

I have not got the time to do it, and if you don't like Mark's prices you won't like mine either !

Semi Naked...

I've been using SRP lately on my lid lol looks good, and p21s should try to get up some beading pics of it LOL!

I have done a few bikes, Clearkote VM Hand Glaze and P21s works nicely.

4 inch Spot pads also work a treat.

Rich and Brazo, out of curiosity how do you advertise your business (car detailing, not your other ones...;)) as I only do it through word of mouth but as a result I know the person I am working for and feel guilty asking for the prices my work deserves.

As I only do it as and when I have time (and if I like the car too ) I am not going to advertise properly or set up a website or anything (I think...) but I am getting a bit fed up charging say £10 an hour when I could be charging more. £10 sounds ok but when you take into account the materials and how much I could be charging just a bit annoying. Also, I am a student and therefore I need to buy books (beer, petrol and women).

Any advice would be much appreciated, got some more shots of an XJ6 and a beemer I did earlier in the week if you want to rate my shining...;)

I don't as I have no time !

Brazo has a website, and a good reputation through word of mouth and on DW. I leave it to him to find me work lol

Word of Mouth (WOM)is the best way start cheap with family and friends, I started off detailing for a case of beer or a small sum to cover products. It has taken me 3-4 years to build a reputation/customer base and unfortunatly its not about making a quick buck at the outset but really honing your skills.

WOM is also great on forums and you can now promote yourself for free or quite cheaply on many car forums. By doing a cheap job another may follow and then another etc. At which point you start to charge more.

Flyers don't work, but it may be worth flyering selected high end cars although these people may see the kosovan car wash as much better value, after all they didn't get a stradale by blowing £200-300 on a 'car clean'.

A website is a useful tool to 'market' yourself through google ad words etc and can be shown as a portfolio to prospective customers. Quality business cards can also help.

The best and one that i'm yet to aspire too is a new, signwritten van - how many people have looked at you whilst working? Having a fulltime advertising board whilst working/sat in traffic etc will help.

Cheers for the advice Brazo. Was kind of thinking WOM was the key, and as my dad gets most my custom through his mates and me not even asking then I must be doing something right! Plus most the cars I have worked on recently, the customers have tipped me too and made very positive comments.

I think the difficulty like you said is a lot of people (even those with expensive cars) aren't really bothered about its condition, or else can't really notice the difference between a £20 inside and out job at their local Kosovan centre and a really top end job.

Another thing I have a difficulty with though is making estimates. I tend to estimate times too low and just end up doing too much for how much I am getting paid, but once I have spent 6 hours or whatever on a car I just want to make it as good job as possible. How do you base your job prices, I base it on what the customer wants done (obviously), the size of the car and the present condition of the car.

Small car e.g. mini/clio/corsa allow 6-8 hrs

Medium car e.g. focus/civic/astra allow 8-10 hours

Small exec e.g. 3 series allow 10-12 hours

Audi A/S3 12-18 hours

Large car/4x4 e.g 5 series/x5 POA LOL!!

Above allows for medium to severe defect removal and includes a proper deswirl and all scratch removal as long as they are safe to remove. This is proper balls out deswirling, despider webbing and scratch removal, leaving a perfect finish and then finishing with a good wax/sealant

The above times may sound lengthy but are for a 'PROPER' job, thats the best way to get a name for yourself!

NB above times do not include washing etc!!
