ph1 172

  Ph 1 172
quick question guys i have just recently got my 172 phase 1. when i give it some hard driving once i stop and turn the car off the center section of the exhaust sounds like its ticking is this normal? and also have the 172 phase 1 got a very low idle or is it just mine sounds like its gonna stall when you first start it up after a minute it levels off and sounds ok. and if possible can someone send me a video of a 172 phase 1 engine sounding healthy lol cheers for any help

Both of those things sound normal mate. Rough running is due to engine trying to keeps its emissions low, should be fine once warmed up. The ticking is just the exhaust cooling down, a lot of cars with big engines do this. Once warmed up it should idle at 750-800rpm, and about 800-850rpm with air con on.

Yes the ticking is the CAT cooling down. My 50cc moped used to tick like a b**ch. And the idle sounds normal mate, my 1.2 16v idles at circa 600 rpm once warm, i thought it was a problem but its normal.

Its just the exhaust silencer stuff that cracks and pops i belive. Even with out a cat it still does it.

You can lift the revs / idle position on a ph1 by turning the gromit on the TB

I went from a mk2ph1 1.2 8v too, i was suprised how different everthing felt, heavier accelerator/clutch, slick gearchange, even the switches and knobs..

Ticking is the exhuast/heat sheilds contracting as they cool down and the idle is normal. Its very spluttery and sounds like its going to stall when cold. Only fix for that is a remap.
