ph1 problems

  Countryman JCW
Hi All,

couple of long term annoying problems on my ph1...

1.

My ph1 since buying it has made a grinding noise under hard acceleration in 1st gear, and now 2nd gear too! All engine mounts are solid, gear box etc, had it looked at under the car etc by a VW mechanic about a year or two ago and he couldnt see anything, its never broken anything, and ive owned the car now for nearly 5 years... any one have any idea what it could be? as i think its about time i got it fixed!

2.

When the car is cold and i dry steer, the is a horrible screech from the engine area, ive lifted up the bonnet when this happens to see what it is, and the aux belt stops spinning when this happens (i think... it could be the belt stopping, but the pulleys keep turning? its been a while since i last checked as i never drive it).

Anyone ever seen/experienced anything like this? as i said they have been doing this for a while and nothings ever broke, just a bit annoying and embarrassing!

Well number 2 is easy, if the aux belt stops turning then it's either a very old best and it's stretched, or the tensioners not right, you want to get that looked at asap, as if it catches or snaps it could throw the aux belt off , and they have a nasty habit of wrapping around the cambelt.

With regards to the 1st problem, I know you say mounts are now, but ar ethey adjusted correctly? it sounds like the downpipe rumbling on the subframe, i had this when i first bought my 172, thought it wasn't that as everyone said it would knock, but where the mount wasn't adjusted right it was vibrating on it very fast which rumbled more than knocked. Undo the 4 big bolts on the top engine mount, get a big bar (go carefull with the a/c pipes) and lever the front mount forward so it is very close (5mm or so) from the edge of the inner wing where the mount sits ,then give it a try, i bet its better

Gearbox mount needs a new one or the stud it loose so its sitting down to far.

Pas pump or tensioner problems or belts not on right

Thanks for the help guys!! Will get the aux belt looked at ASAP as I had them all done whilst this was happening... I think you're right regarding the exhaust! Very annoying, will play around with it this weekend
