Ph2 172 or 182 which one to buy?

Well ive not been part of cliosport for almost 5 years now after selling the old mk1 hybrid now im looking at either a ph2 172 or a 182 but unsure what to go for...

So really the question is which ones the best? I have a budget of around £4k and looking for something which hasnt been messed with too much in good condition with service history.

Im swaying more to the 182 mainly for climate, cruise control, the exhausts and the wheels...

or am i just better off getting the 172?

There's no "best" out of the Ph2s IMO.

You could pick up a dog of a 182, or a MINT 172 for that. They basically are as fast as each other .. there's slight geometry differences, but essentially unless your name is M.Schumacher, you're never going to notice the difference around Brands Hatch.

So basically it's down to the cost, and the looks.

Your post suggest you prefer the looks of the 182 .. so go for one of those :star:

Watch out for cam-belt schedules and all the other usual stuff...

/TEG.

Thanks guys,
Is there really that little difference between the 172s and 182s?
Well the only thing really is the exhaust and wheels... is it really worth spending all that extra cash just for how it looks from behind and i can always change the wheels... i like 172 cup wheels tbh but i wouldnt want a cup :p

im not really into the ph1 172s melissa.... i like the front but the rest seems dated... although yellow has to be an awesome colour :D

First question is are you going to be putting coilovers on? Because most 182's i've seen have Cup pack's which limit's you to what coilovers are available.

But apart from that matter, personally the 172 make's more sense regard's money. It's nigh on the same speed, has half leather, has climate control, still handles well and is a little more of a stealth look than the 182.

You can pick up the 172's dirt cheap compared to 182's, the only time i'd say it's worth the extra for a 182 is a) if you can't stand any of the 172 colour's and b) if you must have the wheels and exhaust.

not sure about the coilovers depends on prices tbh..
Id probably be opting for a black one either shape probably.. id like the RB or liquid yellow 182 but that means going over budget.

Think i might look for a late ph2 172 then. Whats the service intervals and belts like? seen alot of 182s up for sale with low miles but had the belts done.

belts are 5yrs 72k what ever comes first (that is the important bit, just because its only done 20k doesnt mean it doesnt need the belts done!) £500 to £700 to have them done, so keep that in mind when buying, its a specialist or dealer only job so again keep that in mind, if a garage says they will throw it in as part of the purchase price, dont go for it

This is true. When i bought mine the car had only done ~20k miles since the belt's were last done, but it had been 5 years. I made sure the price reflected this too and got them done asap. Good job too as the auxiliary belt was about fooked!

Think i might get a 172 then doesnt seem to be any justification in paying theextra for a 182z
Thanks for the help everyone, now i just need to find a good example :p

just get a ph1 mate and the money you save get the back bumper updated and gets some mods and sort the interior out! that way you wont have to get the ph2 problem.

The way prices have dropped you could get a decent 182 on your budget, that's what i would go for given the choice.

I actually prefer the way my 172 drove, engine seamed to "flow" more, 182 is more jerky, hard to explain.

  260% JCW
172 mk 2, cheaper, nicer wheels, more discrete and doesn't have nasty grey headlights.

  VX220, RS Clio 200t,
To be honest you can get a good 182 for £3.5K. I got mine in October (both cup packs) for about that. And it's black.... totally standard, but getting a re-map to remove the jeckyness (vvt in the 182 is more agressive by feel hence why it might not "flow" as well) But to that note, both are excellent cars and you won't regret either....although if you get a 172 and end up behind a 182 try not to regret buying one without the exhausts poking out!! (at least the 172 is still symmetrical on the other hand)

Is this the one with the whining gearbox, heater stuck on and knacker wheel bearings?

I still maintain a good 182 with full history is £4.5k.

I reckon my 182 is 'good'.

Bought 16 months ago for £3900, FSH but high mileage. Every problem I have had could of and has happened to other lower mileage cars and couldn't of been predicted really. I'd buy high mileage again to save money in the future, definitely.

I was looking few months back for a 182 for a friend, reasonable millage, with belts done, good condition, only acceptable mod was exhaust, really was hardly any about, Most nearer £5k TBH.

VVT more aggressive? Who told you that.

True that ^ this owners club is notorious for driving down prices. I'm yet to see any of these good examples [eople speak of with belts done, wanting nothing, for below 4k.

  172 Cup
Go for the 172, stealth exhaust FTW double barrel pea shooters on the 182 FTL and alot cheaper you'll have spare cash for a few good Mods.

think im defo looking at a ph2 172 now.. if i was to get a 182 id want a liquid yellow one which are abit pricey.
Think ill get either a black, blue or flame red 172 :)
Anything i should really watch out for then apart from box and belts?
