Phase 1 airbox conversion done, BUT ??

  RS RIP
I have just finished up with fitting a phase 1 box + two 65mm airfeeds. Taken the acoustic valve out for some space, AS IF THERE IS ANY
bloody knuckles at the end, but worth it.

Only thing is, with the standard elbow to TB i really had to squeeze/force the box in there and there's just no space , also because of the bracket running alongside the battery. Now its in ,but wedged upon radiator (fan-bit) and the CAF i got is scrubbing against the bracket so in no time it will wear holes into them ..

Who's done the conversion and can help me ?

May need a different (shorter) elbow to TB ?

Many thanks

No, Phase 2 .. have cut some off (5mm) and now it's on there but wedged in
Did'nt want to buy another elbow part because wanted to try and keep it cheap. For the moment it'll do like this.

Soon my battery is going to be moved to the back so i will have some more space in the engine bay
THink it's been a very good mod , it revs more freely , torque is also nasty good.
Nice little mod that i stole off this forum from inventor Ien Beach ;

Top mod !!

Nice Frank !

I was thinking about this aswell. But you got the airbox from marktplaats ;-) Some day I will and might try aswell, also an exhaust if the old one finaly goes.

Haven't read about the elbow, and also was surpriced that you posted it did not fit properly. Anyway I ready about the coolant hose that can shear through due to the airbox rubbing against it. So check that.

Do'nt know why they changed designs, probably using same airbox for different type of cars and saving production costs
I got the idea off this forum; read that the airbox design of the phase 1 may be better.
Not just this one thread.

Also the car does feel faster, may be because of the 65 mm CAF's i put on and acoustic valve removed. As for the "maxogen" bit, never thought of comparing it to one actually ;)

Cheers on the coolinghose comment, i'll check because it's rubbing indeed

Mine is wedged in also, Cut a little bit off my Samco but it's still pretty wedged in there

  Lots of Alfas
If the phase1 airbox is that good, how come they never kept the cylinder design for the ph2 / 182's ??

No idea why renault changed it, they prefered to use a ph1 setup on some of the cup race cars for a while. Some say the ph1 box sounds nicer but a ph1 doesnt have accustic valve.

Thats a good point, on a ph1 they have some nylon wrapped round the pipe and a plastic clip to protect the hose from being rubbed by the box.

Mine is defo scrubbing the coolant hose, not a good thing..

once battery goes to the back i'll be looking for a 45degree angle elbow so the box sits where the battery used to be.
Because such an elbow probably does'nt come with the oilbreather connection i'll put a filter on the tube, or an oilcatch tank.

Anybody know if there should be suction (?) or vaccume on this pipe for the oil to be able to come out ? (Because you'd think so with it being sucked in to the TB as it is on the original setup) ?

Maybe the tube will get clogged up when there's no vaccume, then just a filter will be a bad idea

Only difference in setup will have been yet even more environmetal issues . Every new car they make is "cleaner" than the one before, sacrificing optimal speed+enginepotential.
Keeping down exhaust emissions is a big theme for the Reno boys, not for me

When getting mine remapped it will be for this setup; more air in, more fuel in, no cat , so a very environmental unfriendly car but it will shift and that's what counts

With a possible cam-change by Fastchip coming up this airfilterjobbie was a good preperation me thinks.

:approve:

^^ mind you, i do think we need to keep mother earth clean ! Never toss anything out the window or things like that But every now and then getting the CO2 producer/global warmer out of the barn for some thrashing also keep me happy

Franx Hillpower sells these elbows with a breather setup....connect just like to original elbow, only smoother/wider inside diamter and not ribs if I remember correctly. So can be cut right to the size so everthing fits like a glove.

(there might be more who sell these)

Ow and we talked about both doing cams maybe...well that's a no go for me, because I changed priorities a bit. Need to get a house first. However small mods will likely be made :)

btw what the sound like of the ph1 box? :D in comparison to the ph2 box?

The phase 1 box with the bigger feeds does have an induction noise to it.
Happy house-hunting !

It does have a bit of induction noise to it, prob because of the bigger CAFs.

Happy house-hunting !!
