Phase 1 double barrel cat (am i restricted to using just this cat)

Ph2 cats are a different length, fyi.

Also, make sure you get one with the correct. Amount of lambdas. Either single of double lambda.

older models had the twin and newer had single??

thik the later ph1 had the single cat with single lambda, but i'm afraid i can't remember

right, all ph1's had the twin cat, but very early ones had only 1 lambda sensor. If you have a post cat lambda sensor, then you can use a ph2 cat

You can still use a Ph2 cut just blank the second lambda hole. BUT you'll have to change the exhaust too so no good really.

No your not restricted to the OEM. You could get a 'sports' cat
