Photoshop help

I want to paste an object onto a background image and then trim the object down to fit the place it should be on the background image. How do i trim just the object?

As long as it is on it's own layer, just make a selection and delete areas off it. Transform it to the right size etc. If you give a bit more detail might be able to help a bit more

As above, create a new layer and then anything you do to it won't affect your background layer.
