Photoshop tutorial

I'm decorating soon and want to see how different colours would look in my rooms. I'm fairly proficient with photoshop, but I've never really got the hang of changing colours of things so they still retain shadow and highlight details. (Similar to how some people on here do with wheels and car colours)

Any one know of any good tutorials to point me in the right direction? I'm using CS2.

you can select the colours you would like to change, or a selection and then set what colour you want it to be, or adjust the hue/ brightness etc..

So if I had a colour chart, is it just guess work trying to adjust the colour on the image to best match the swatch? Or is there a more scientific way?
