Picked Up My V6 Yesterday

  Mk2 Clio V6 / 996 C4S

Picked her up yesterday after work, and absolutly love it. :D

Id never seen one in the metal up untill that point, and the pictures in magazines really dont get over the message of just how amazing it looks. My cheeks actually hurt from grinning so much, I must have looked a right nobber.:p

The colours fantastic as well. Especially in the showroom under there lights.

The engine is just dying to be opened up as well, but Im a keen one for running them in properly so that will have to wait. Loads of power there though. Makes a great worrble noise as it hits 3000, what it sounds like over that I cant wait to find out.

Only down side was that the autochanger doesnt work for some reason. The dash mounted CD works though. And I might be seen as picky, but the pedals still had there protective covers on (A manky black tar covered film). Im going to try and get a free service for my diesel Clio out of them for that.

But all in all Im happier than a pig in sh1t.

PS: Pictures will follow shortly. The salesman took a load in the showroom, so Ill try and get them sorted.

Cheers mate. Nah, Im a right stickler for procedure. 675 Miles and nothing over 3000 rpm.

A question for you Steve. Does yours run a little hot?

I noticed yesterday the temp gauge was a little above normal, had a look under the engine cover only to find the expansion tank just below minimum. This was when the engine was hot mind.

When Ive finished here at work Ill go home and check the level again now that its stood all night. Phoned Renault, they said dont worry, the level will sort its self out.

You stick to procedure and you wont reap the full gains out of your engine later on. actually you probably wont notice in a v6 but 172 that were thrashed from the word go are much more responsive as a rule. Big engines can take the punishment after all you havent bought it to do shopping runs in have you?

  ExigeV6|Q5|DS3|Fiat

cain it from the word go, if you dont you could never reap the full benefits of that V6!

  172 Cup, V6 255, Williams

If anything level should rise slightly when hot, not drop. As for Renault saying level will sort itself out thats typical! Let it go cold. Top coolant up to the MAX line. Then run it up. Level should be slightly raised.

  Forester Sti, SC Clio V6,

Im just running after a full rebuild and can tell for a fact that the V6 needs running in from a top end perspective - big ends and the bottom end generally are fine but I had two cracked pistons when I stripped the engine after 9000 miles.

They crack between the lower rings and casued no damage to the bores but leave floating bits of piston wedges between rings (I had no smoke at all but probably a small loss odf compression) this haappened through sh*te (ragging) running in by me!!!!

The proper procedure is keep the engine reasonably loaded in the mid range 2-4000 rpm - do not overload it or run it to light - this ensures a decent temperature is generated in the combustion chambers leading to most expansion and contraction and hence bedding in. Ragging it will generate to much heat to quickly and on short jouneys will kill it. Lots of shortish 20 mile journies ie lots of heat cycles is only way - ask any proffessional engine builder. Below 3000 rpm all the time is bad for it.

I also had two screwed big end bearings which had pickes up swarf from production so pay the money and change the oil at 600 miles.

Probably not many of you pulled one of these apart for no reason I did and it wasnt pretty

 All apreciated Mike, but when I get the new one guess what............

..........Im going to rag it to peices!!!

If it goes wrong itll be going back to Renault! Anyway, thought these engines were all test bed run in???

When I picked up my last Vee, the sales guy said the running in period is only to cover there backside in case they havent tightened something up properly. Ive not had any engine or gearbox probs over the last 29 months of ownership!!!

But im sure people will find your coments (and mine for that matter) interesting and will come to there own conclusions.

Cheers, SteveV6.

  Forester Sti, SC Clio V6,

Your call, and they probably will pick up the bill for any failures (unless they play the abuse card which is happening a lot of diffs lately), and I guess if your down on power you wont know unless you Dyno - Ive seen 215bhp up to 241bhp from "standard engines" and a lot of this is down to compression changes due to rings/bores and valves sealing or not due to detonation damage on exhaust valves from early ragging.

You may have the figures on your engine and if its at the top end of the scale lovely - but please never believe the sales guy - he wont know - most of the time they cant even get the delivery dates right never mind the correct running in procedure for a long stroke engine for an Espace/Safrane thats had high comression pistons fitted and then been wacked in a sports car!!

As you say everyone to their own but remember the biggest problem you could have is driving the 1.2 dynamique courtesy car for the 6 weeks whilst you wait for parts!!!! - even if they are paying - or worse being outdragged by another standard one!!!!

Thanks for the comments guys. However Ill stick to running the car in thanks, I always have done. My Mk1 172 was ran in and that went like stink. My 3 series was ran in and I noticed a real difference in that over time.

The V6 really does feel pretty tight, especially the gears. But the engine does seem very willing to rev. And the noise is egging me on big time.

Annoyingly enough when my wife drove it last night she gave it rock all, daft bint.

Anyway when it stops p1ssing down Ill try and get some good pics sorted.:D

PS: On the Motorway home it was doing 31mpg, pretty impressive.

Guys,

Has anyone that has ordered the new V6, in anything other than silver, sticking with the silver side-intakes, can you specify a body-colour option? I know Ill be getting them sprayed when I get mine!

  2012 WRX Waggon

I like the contrast between the colours other than silver, and the intakes.

Running In? good luck. I lasted about 2 days before I started hammering it!

Paul CTR, Mine Blue, and the silver air in-takes, IMO look great they break up the colour of the car. It might look like a big blue blob otherwise. Plus I think the blue could scratch easy, and to get into my car when its in the garage I have to squeeze down the side of the car, blue intakes could get marked.

Broadbean, you have one too, excellent. Still loving it?

*shakes head at all of you*

RUN IT IN! And remember its not just the engine your running in!

one LOL

Is there alot of difference between the new V6 and the 172? Im seriously considering getting one when the prices drop.

IMHO, one of the best cars money can buy for under £40K!

Just looked at the EVO test again, where they pitted it up against the EVO FQ, VX220T and the TVR. Just noticed the V6 is quicker than the VX220 from 70-100! The VX only beats it by 0.5 round the whole track, which is impressive considering the VX is a track specialist!

Hey mate, dont know about the new front ends being bad, I got a serious one the first time I ever did a long run in mine - ggrrrrr

And I tell you what - how many effing flies / bugs did I have to clean off it in the middle of Summer??!! I tell thee, theres A LOT of front-end on a V6 isnt there! :D

Yeh, but they look bloody great.

I could forgive that car of almost anything when I open the garage door and see it sat there. And when you start it up.:D

When I get some pictures sorted Ill take one of mine in the garage, just to show how tight a squeeze it is.

New houses have garages the size of shoeboxs:mad:
