What's it's purpose? Is it there purely to restrict oil movement when cornering, acting as a baffle?

Stops crank dragging in the oil which causes power loss and also airates the oil

It's called a windage tray and does as Dan 519 says keeps the crank in clean air.

No just stops it getting thrown up into the crank by the air moving around as the engine runs.
