Plastic welding

I'm trying to cost up a repair.

The previous owner of the Cup I'm looking at has had a 'Pipecraft' SS exhaust fitted. In order to fit this, 'Pipecraft' have cut a section of bumper away.

Now the modification to the bumper has been done well, but I'd rather have a stock-looking car with a Stealth system fitted.

Would the results be better if I were to try and source a Cup rear bumper or plastic weld/ repair and spray the existing one?

Would the repair be cheaper than a s/h bumper?

Its quite obvious IMO that a new rear bumper would look better, Plastic is difficult to work with when welding/repairing, I don't know how experienced you are with it so cannot comment on that much but its alot harder than metal welding imo.

It would probably be cheaper to just repair the existing bumper however, but if you get yourself round a few scrappies you might get lucky, especially with the amount of clios/cups that were crashed over the winter

I honestly didn't think it'd be as difficult as you suggest! You learn something new every day!

...I don't know how experienced you are with it...

I'd rather pay someone to do it. Then, if the job looks awful or if it falls apart after a month I can return it for a 'proper' job!

I may have made it sound harder than it is, but its more difficult than metal because of how plastic behaves under heat, there probably are people around that could do a top job and make it look spot on, but i don't know how much they'd be charging, i'd imagine a fair wack.

The best thing to do would be to ring a few places and see if they can do the repair method, ask them how much it'll cost. Then ring a few scrappies and ask about bumpers, and also get a quote for a respray on a bumper incase you can't find one the right colour.

See which one works out cheaper overall, jobs a good'un.

Or, you may well find someone on here if your lucky who wants a cutout bumper that you could do a straight swap with, worth a try.

A bodyshop coulod do it no probs mate. Mines could anyway.

Would you use a 'modified' bumper as a bargaining point when discussing the sale of a car? For instance: "It'd cost x to fix this..."

Bargaining to get the price higher or lower?

Mods never add value to a car, just because you spend 800 quid on an exhaust system and 400 quid on a new set of tyres doesn't make the car worth anymore than it would of been without.

Good point, but i was meaning were you asking because you wanted to use it as something to push the price up, or asking to see if it was something a buyer would use to knock the price down.

I asked for my exhuast cutout to be plastic welded.
No where does it with a hole that big!
You'll need to get it filled, and even at that not alot of places will even touch it!

There is a forum on here by $torm Rider in the Clio Projects section! He is currently doing up a MK3 to euro standards and he has done some amazing plastic welding! He himself has said he was open to work! He is based in London! I would give him a PM! Worst he can do is say no!
