Play in steering...16v

  Clio 182
Iv been told this is down to the steering rack?
Where is it and how do i go about getting it fixed? Ive been told it can be welded...?

Really stupid question, is it inside the engine bay? or do I need to strip the dash to get to it?

think it will be easier to do with the column off. no need to strip the dash, just the plastic around the column, two nuts, two bolts and nut+bolt that attaches to steering rack..

^^what the man said and you can weld it while its still in the car but get some rubber mats down in case your carpet goes up.

Alternatively, you can insert shims (basically just flat pieces of metal) into the joint to fill up the gap and remove the play. Have a look at http://www.retro-renault.com/viewtopic.php?t=3887 - theres a quite a lot on that page so search for "The steering column, what fun this was!" and you'll see how.

yeh just make sure your wheels and steering wheel are bang on straight before the weld goes on!

and if u do it in the car, make sure seats etc are covered up, and there is no fuel leaking or anything lol
