Play in steering

My girlfriend has just purchased a Clio 16v. Only one problem. theres about 2-3 inches of play in the steering before the car moves. it does this whether the car is stationary or moving and also with the car off or started. any ideas??

Thanks

Chris

Weld the joint, its a common fault do a search and you should find pics of what is needed to be done.

i wouldnt weld i it if i were you, its a pretty important part of the car the steering lol just get a new one.

The linkage at the bottom of the steering common may be knackered. It happened to mine, and a few other people on here have had the same problem. Get it checked before ordering a new rack.

Mine cost me £190 fitted I think mate. Had to get a 2nd opinion though as the 1st garage said it wasnt the column, then the renault specialist I took it to said it was!

Yea, Its most probably the universal joint on the steering column, just above the steering rack. thats what mine was, the rack was fine. Some people have welded the joint which seems to have worked fine. I got a new steering column fitted. It got rid of an annoying squeak i had too! bonus.

hmm i think i might have this - when u say play you mean loose?

i can turn the wheel to the left and it feels slightly lighter than turning to the right

u can wobble it left to right and dont feel normal for a pas wheel

When i bought my williams you could sit stationary or drive in a straight line, and turn the steering wheel about 10 degrees left and right without the wheels turning at all. got quite dangerous at times the wheels could turn slightly on their own! very wobbly under heavy accelleration!.
