Playing Games On Linux

What's this like?

As far as I understand linux doesn't support direct x so games have to use open gl and this can cause a decrease in performance.(?)

Does anyone play demanding games e.g. FEAR on a linux distribution and if so do you have any problems?

Don't think fear was made to work on a linux distribution, unlike quake 3 for example where you can get Q3 for Linux (which i found alot faster than the windows version).

Running through Wine might work, but I doubt you'd see an increase in performance.

not after an increase, would just like to know if games like that would work and would run ok i.e. not slower than on windows

Some games run slower others run fine. It all depends theres a program called cedega that will run most windows games including direct 3d games.

Some linux native games work even better in linux most opengl games get ported to linux. some even come with the linux version already on disk.

My mate plays HL2 and CSS etc in cedega and it runs perfectly though.

KDF gave me a link to Cedega last night, looks good and worth a go at the trial.

I was trying the ubuntu live CD yesterday, seems pretty good. Will be installing it properly on a spare HDD to have more of a play this evening.
