Please help i want a Williams!!

  172

Im looking to buy a Clio williams 2 and was wondering roughly how much they went for in the garages or private and what the common faults are with them. Im looking for a very clean example with around 75,000miles, modified or standard not bothered, fsh history (or majority of it). WHats the cheapest im looking at and what price for the above criteria. I dont know anything about these cars appart from "they are the best hot hatches on the road" so i hear. I currently drive a 106 gti and the next step really is a WILLIAMS. Please help me, all info is greatly appreciated.

P.S How much difference in performance is there between the williams and clio 16v valve, and is it worth the extra insurance priemium

good choice!! :D Main thing to check is rust on arches, and round the rear wiper arm.

Ill leave it to the experts to give u more info tho, but go for it!! You wont regret it :)

Yeah rust on the rear arches is a common problem but can be sorted, rust on the sills that run along the car, look for any rust in the boot under the carpet. Just look for things that you would on any other car i.e. a good look at the body work for signs of respray. Look under the car for any and see if thats all ok. Take it for a nice long test drive making sure the car is cold when starting it ect ect. Not much in it between a Valver and a Willy, Williams handle great though. Not tempted by a Willy 1?

I can help you with things to check on a williams....(guys correct me where ever)

Check for bad respays (should be obvious)

Check the front springs arnt broken...(expensive to replace)

Check there is no play in the steering colum

Rust is a killer - sills, have a good look under the front bumper, remove the filler cap and have a good look, both rear arches, rear tailgate likes to rust (on the drainholes and around the rear wiper) make sure the wheel arch splash guards are attached, if they are not the fixing have rusted away.

It should say williams 2 on the bootlid and rear wings above the bumpstrip (again expensive to replace)

Make sure the rear handbrake works

And enjoy !

About 3500 I reckon would be the cheapest youd get one like that for(private sale).Check the amount of movement on the engine mountings, cus they can wear quickly, and the front tyres! The willy has greater torque than the 16v and after owning both I reckon there is a resonable difference in performance. You dont have to thrash the williams as much, pulls from under 2000rpm.Handling,as mentiond by enid is exceptional(I used to own a wrx and its on par with that).I would go for a standard car,but thats only cus Im not really into mods! chris.

no offence, but I wouldnt see a 106gti to a williams an upgrade... more a change
A mate of mine used to have a 106 GTI - bit of a nipper...

Not slating the GTI cos its a good hatch back, but the Willy in my opinion was far better drive all round...thus being more than just a change...

  Willy2

i disagree with the last comment(although i am byest) the willy is soo much fun to drive, thats why i have owned two of them. In my opinion the willy is not the fastest car in a straight line but for total package it is amazing, handles so well and lots of grunt. TBH the willy turns heads wherever you go, cos they are just so rare, you go to any car meet and i guarentee you the Willy will always turn heads. No matter what other cars are there!

  Willy2

Also one more thing, the willy behaves so much differently to the valver, although it looks the same, the willy is alot stronger in these areas, gearbox, engine and subframe. There is no sunroof on the willy 1 and 2 so this make the body a little bit stronger too.

I agree...younger in better shape, better colour, better mirrors (and electric) better lights, ABS and sunroof (god send in summer) - but its missing the buzz factor of the number to me.

When i bought mine, I wanted the youngest one i could find which was a 3..Dno194 helped me decide.

At the end of the day, Its just me being me lol.... 3 is the best...and FSH is a must !

I love my williams....in fact i need to wash it to make up for the above post lol.

Lol^

I can see what youre saying, I think.. its not an upgrade if you see upgrading as buying a newer, more modern car.

Its definately an upgrade in performance/handling/driving experience though!!

Thanks for all the help lads but im still a bit undiceded. Recently took a williams 2 for a spin and thought my standard 106 gti was even with it to 80-90 allthough the torque difference in the williams in 4th and 5th was very much noticable. Really love the williams as its so rare (and it sounds like a beast!!), love the clio 16 valver as its a lot cheaper on insurance than the williams (i think) but really love the 106 gti to because its so god damn quick for a 1.6 (and to be honest i felt that my car handled better than the willy allthough that could be because i have more confiedence in it) Really struggling on what to buy because the next car i own i want to tune and style and spend some dosh on it.
