plusnet looking a bit s**t

right signed upto plusnet the other day and was connected last night yay i hear you say, well sort of it works but its f**king slow the router says connected at 2.2mbits but im downloading at anywhere between 60k a second and about 110 :( where is the rest off it !!!!!! unless they are only letting me have 1mbit even tho router says i can have 2 :s

Your router will only tell you what your exchange is capable of eg 2mb, mines says 1mb but im on 512k, unless your actually paying for 2mb?

Plusnet do cap speeds on some connections also before 12am I believe, only on P2P stuff though if I remeber correctly.

  Nissan Jewk
Mine says it connects at 2.2 also, though I only pay for 1. I'm pretty sure im not d/loading at 2.2 either!

impaying for upto 2mbit so i sould be getting it but even if i was only paying for 1mbit im getting less than that most of the time

as im away from tonight tilll the 12th i will just let it go and see if they change anything

this was from about 6pm till about 11pm

Re: plusnet looking a bit sh*t

The 2.2mb you're refering to is your "sync" speed (not what the exchange is capable of)

Some ISP's sync your line at the highest speed it can support (depending on length, SNR, Attenuation etc) but restrict your real downloading speed to whatever package/service you are signed up for.

By syncing your line at the highest speed available to you it makes upgrades alot easier for the ISP when/should you decide to upgrade.

Did you migrate in? What speed were you on before? What were you trying to download, from where? Is you exchange showing as red?

Sometimes they have the exchange sync set for 2 Mbit, but rate limit to 1mbit until you poke them.

If it's none of the above, then it's more than likely you've become a victim of their traffic shaping!

its the premier account its a brand new account never had adsl before in my name or on the telephone line

the exchange is green the exchange i think is york clifton

i was downloading from microsoft some of the hd clips trying plusnets speed tests and adsl quide speed tests and another speed test also downloading from mozilla etc this was on 2 machines

Modem or Router?

If it's a router then post up your line stats.

Re: plusnet looking a bit sh*t

VP status for Clifton is absolutely fine. It's hardly got any lines going into it anyway so it won't be an exchange capacity problem.

its a router a netgear dg834guk with lates firmware on it updated that but made no difference also tried it with just router plugged in etc

their modem has just arived so i could try it with that too

Your upstream SNR is a little low for some reason but ultimately your line is fine.

Try the BT Wholesale speed test as someone else suggested but follow the instructions carefully.

mine is 2272 and 288 on plus.net too McBunny, their upstream is sh*te

lol. Not their upstream, it's BT's upstream.

All BT wholesale customers (i.e non LLU) have the same upstream rate!

EDIT - SNR aka Noise Margin. Just incase some people thought I meant upload speed.
