Today,me,the mrs, my daughter, her boyfriend,my grandson and the dog decided to go to barmouth for the day(left the kitchen sink at home...lol).
Got on the motorway at juction 10,m6,took it steady(60mph speed restrictions) then turned for the m54,halfway to telford the car starts playing up.
I was travelling in the outside lane at 70 and with my foot still on the accelerator,it started to slow down, then speed back up,then slow down.
I moved to the inside lane, hazards on,and gradually came to a halt, popped open the bonnet, nothing seemed amiss, looked underneath the car and the twin barrel cat was red hot,the road underneath the cat had dried up.
I got back into the car,re-started and then managed to drive into telford,i parked up and then went for a walk round telford to see if the cat would cool down. After just over an hour,i then drove towards bridgenorth to avoid the motorway and managed to get back home with no problems.
What i want to know is,do i have to replace the cat?....my car is a ph1,has 112k on the clock and a straight through exhaust.
Just to note:before the journey i brimmed the tank with fuel and also added some redex,a little over the required amount, would this be a factor?
Any suggestions to the cause of the problem would be gratefully appreciated.
