possible engine temp problem

I have noticed that when i drive around town my temp gauge show half way, but then if i go on the motorway it drops to the second line. is this normal? can understand due to airflow temp will go down but seems a bit too much.

yes it normal, it should usualy hold halfway anyway, if it goes higher than 3/4 and your fan doesnt kick in then you have a problem, but to the sounds of it, theres no issue and nothing to worry about. if its really bugging you tho you could check that the thermostat isent getting stuck open, but aslong and you engine isent getting HOT, its nothing to worry about.

no never goes above half way. just wanted to check the drop in temp was normal really as its under warranty and want to iron out any faults before its too late

aslong as its not getting hot all will be ok, but on the other hand when the engine thinks its running cooler than normal it will use more fuel, so if its under warranty i wont hurt to get renault to give their opinion

^^^Flol wher you had that info from? its not normal at all mate and it is something to worry about as it can cause all sorts of problems

OP whether you are driving on a motorway or round town it should always sit on half way by what you have described you either do not have a thermostat or it is sticking get it looked at could also be a faulty CTS.

If your wheel falls off don't worry about it as you have three more!!

but I have a 1*2 so how can richd say that he has a different engine

Have near enough the same problem as the OP. Although with mine sometimes the needle doesn't go up at-all but then if I turn the heater up then the needle sprigs to life and goes to just underhalf.

I'm guessing that there is some sort of blockage or the CTS is fecked as above, but is there anything else that could cause this?

as long as you have basic skills its easy !just did the cts and thermostat on mine very easy job, theres a guide in the how-to's

I have just fitted a new thermostat, was really easy to fit. seems to have fixed the problem, temp gauge stays half way all the time now. thanks for everyones input
