Possible new owner...

Hi guys im looking to purchase a 172 in the next couple of weeks and just wanted some advice. My current car is a fiat coupe turbo which ive had for 3 and a half years, and loved it!:D But starting to look for a house next year and need a car which i can run on sensible money. After reading alot of magazine tests etc.. decided the 172 is for me. Few questions tho.. Mk1 or Mk2? Is it true the mk1 is faster? Evo magazine got 0-60 6.6 and 0-100 18.2 in the mk1, 0-60 7 and 0-100 19.5 in the mk2 is this common?

Finally wot sort of car can i get for my money? my limit is abt £8500 tho id ideally like to spend less.

In general terms, people here regard the Ph1 172 as quicker than the Ph2. This might be due to the engines freeing up with age though (as was the case with the 16V and Williams of old). The earlier Ph1 172s came with an alloy bonnet for that essential weight saving! ;)

I may be looking for a Ph1 172 soon and my top tips would be a Sunflower Yellow 172 or the rare 172 Exclusive (172 made, full leather, BBS alloys and unique Scarab Green paint). Theres a low mileage 172 Exclusive on Autotrader for £5,700!! I could do staight swap for my Williams at that price!

Yeah i saw that 172 exclusive to. On the autotrader website it said cat d at the bottom of the add im not to sure but doesnt that mean its damaged? it could explain the low price?

The Mk2 interior is so much nicer than the Mk1s, that would sway it for me. Id get one with a years warranty still there..just incase!
