possible project

something i have been thinking of, just not sure whether to do it or not.

its become a common conversion now but i fancy the idea of it. was thinking of purchasing a valver / williams shell, then dropping in a 172 engine, as i would start with just a shell with no engine etc it should be cheap, i would also get this painted to a colour i wanted. the engine would probably be quite standard but would have time taken on it, would be painted etc and put in very nicely. the interior would just be 2 buckets with a tidy rear.

whats anybodies thoughts?

the main thing i am worried about is the £££ of this project, to fund this i would be selling my mint 172 ad there is no way i want the project to cost anywhere near as much as i can get for the 172.

thoughts, insults etc all welcome

do you really want to commute in a car that has no comforts?

you said in GC the other day how the 172 does your head in in traffic... imagine that but with two buckets and no interior or AC in the summer.

i'd save for something quick and a bit more refined tbh...that's my next call too.

saying that, i'd love a 172 converted Mk1....but as a second car. which i can't afford atm

chris.....i will be moving out mate, that is not an option at all, and i will be moving so that i don't have to drive, as for no ac, i would have windows.....

unless you plan to do a lot of the work yourself i'd imagine that you won't have much change from what you get from selling your 172... it's probably worth having a chat with a couple of the people who have already done a similar sort of conversion and see what they reckon it's cost them - danlp6 being one, and i think beaniemoo has also done one

get on it! i'd love one but not prepared for the ball ache! just go for a different colour to the blue... no shortage of information or people you can call on, on here! i'm not sure it would be the money side of things that would worry me but its spending time without a running car if i went all in. also what quality of conversion to you want! the best always costs money....... no matter how you look at it or who you know!

projects get way out of hand IMO.. once you pop you just cant stop.

i cringe when i look at how much ive spent, i did a spreadsheet the other day with benR..

should i post it LOL...f**k that, it makes me sick

i dont think you could do a tidy job for 4k (like your old one)

lol @ ben, ive been putting everything i spend on a spreadsheet aswell, those numbers soon add up!! :quiet:

however i dread to think how much it would be if i added labour onto that! makes me feel a bit better

i know the feeling of spending alot of money on a car i bought for £380 lol but the car itself isnt worth alot, its the bits on/in it, i could buy another shell and do the same all over again with all the parts ive got, the shell is merely a structure for bolting the parts to lmao

i decided from day one that this car wasnt going to be mint, i would be pi**ed off if i spent another grand doing the bodywork and then took it through a tyre wall :dead: so diy repairs all the way for me (may look a bit shoddy but fuction over form :D)

i know how you feel, its like when and if you come to sell them.. what would mine be worth 8k at the most! someone would of got 40ks worth of car for penuts. makes me sick.. but you just never get back what you spend.

if i would of added labour to mine, i couldn't afford to do it, benR is the only person who ive paid for labour , minus a few bits like paint and the suspension set-up

with a good mate who's just done what you're considering, you're onto a good start... only concern i'd have is the budget side of things

The costs ran away with me in no time at all to the point now where i'm removing unused parts i bought at the start because they're not up to the standard i'm now working to. We're planning to have the conversion looking factory and it takes a good amount of time with all the wireing to be trimmed back removed etc but that doesn't cost. if you have any specific questions don't hesitate to ask.

Think there should be a thread started called: I'm clinically insane because i spent.... on my project lol

this thread and what people have said has totally highlighted the for's and againsts i have been thinking about...lol

beaniemoo after reading your thread it would be of a similar standard as yourself i would want to be working to, i am not fussed about carbon panels etc, just a mint, 172 powered valver, if possible could you give me some info on £££ that i should expect to incure (perhaps over pm mate)

daniel - if it was a standard colour, tungy would be the colour of choice, if it was a shell i started with it would deffo be a different colour

  F4R'd ITB'd '92 cup racer
i wanted a tungy aswell :( maybe when ive hammmered this shell into the ground i can reshell it as a tungy :D

has beanie sent you the cost of his yet, he sent it to me the other day cos he wanted to reassure himself he wasnt insane spending the money, from our conversation we basically summised that he was insane, but so am i so he's in good company :drunk: :clown:

Right, I'm gonna dig the big book 'we don't read for fear of crying' out tonight and i'll forward the costs i've scribbled down in it to ya, Ben you can have it too if it'll make you Laugh bearing in mind it's a 500quid MOT failiure i'm working on LOL

I've spent close to a grand on parts for my pug which only cost me £1400, projects are fun - fcuk convention I say.

If I had the time and the space to do one I would like to give it a go. It would be a nice conversion if done well. What sort of cost are you looking at if you do it yourself?

Rory dont you fancy sticking an MI16 engine in there? I used to have a 205GTI back in the day, awesome car. :)

  tiTTy & SV650
^ Cars only on 56k so this ones just gonna be a nice clean standard low mileage example, new flat will take over soon. I'd maybe drop a gti-6 lump and box into a miami blue one in the future though!

I bought mine when I was 18 (13 years ago!) it was certainly an exciting car to learn how to drive in. Lift off oversteer nearly caught me out a few times :D.

  tiTTy & SV650
I had a 1.6gti as my first car myself, they're great fun. I've not had any lift off oversteer moments in the 1.9 yet, only happens when I want it to lol

well i would not want to spend no more than 3k from start to finish, i don't think that would happen though

  tiTTy & SV650
I'd say not a hope in hell of doing a bare shell project for £3k, parts alone likely to consume most of that.
