power in 5th gear

  clio Rb 182 ff cup
Hi everyone just wondering what the acceleration should be like in 5th gear,if i change gear at 7500 from 4th to 5th it seams to die,it doesn't go slower but it doesn't accelerate much either.Oh its a 182 cup

7.5k? Engine red lines stock at 7.25k.

Its not going to fly in 5th gear at those speeds though. (unless its one of those rare engines which few people has).

It might be a less than 7500 cant really tell its about the time the change light comes on it is showing about 110 on the speedo.I thought it did 140ish it would take the whole of the m6 to get to that at the rate of acceleration

I can get to 120 relatively easy, but after that it takes a while to make it go faster. It will do it, but it takes a while, and in the time your waiting, normally think 'I should slow down' lol.

without a BIG engine or decent turbo you ain't gonna get much out of anything changing up @ over a ton!

Mine picks up in 5th just after 110mph.. takes me to 130 easy after that..

Some of us only dream of doing a ton :( I did get 90 though...downhill, with the wind behind me.

My 1.2 16v does a ton in 4th then pulls cleanly to 110 in 5th and if you take a few weeks off work it stops at about 116. Maximum recorded speed is 106 on the garmin though!

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
Infact my valver pulls to the limiter in 4th, 140mph, then still pulls in 5th but runs out at 155!

That would require 250 bhp.

So there are two alternative possibilities. One is whether you should believe your speedo. The other is whether we should believe you.

Exactly the same as my 1.4 8v! Wish I had an extra 8v! Change into 5th at 90 but never normally goes past 110. I've stopped trying now though.....*runs to car to go and try.....runs back in....not worth congestion and driving ban*

never been past 120 in mine sadly, got there no problems in 5th though

Funnily enough, I got a video on the way home on a dual-way airfield.

times are about

6.5 to 60
10 to 80
18/19 to 100

which is about right for a standard 172 I think.

  BMW M3
i dont think mine pulls that cleanly to 100... it took around 18secs by looks of it, and following the clock of the video, but seems to struggle more than Justins at around 80mph... but bare in mind mine doesnt have any of the mods Justin has apart from panel filter.

got a vid of mine...

Yeah, ive got remap, sports cat and exhaust, oh and a matched inlet so maybe why i pull a bit better at higher speed. My blowing exhuast prob doesnt really make a diff the performance as its only slight.

Seems a good pace for a std 182 though mate !

I think in my vid i was changing a little bit later then you. 63 - 92 and 110 which might have put me in the power more for the next gear.

I made your 0-100 in around 16 secs which is what i would expect from a healthy std 182.

yeh i get abit scared taking it too far thru the revs, it sounds like its crying thru pain just before the limiter hhaha

does it seem like a good pace for standard tho? im never sure if it was quick enough or not haha

  BMW M3
Yeah, seem exactly what i would expect, using the timer on the vid.

0-60 i think was between 6-7 sec and 100 in 16 sec.

Remember it takes a whole second to past before you count the 1st second lol.... sometimes catches me out lol

You just need longer Autobahns.
125 indictead which was 113 on the GPS is my best ever with 65hp.

And that realy was in Germany.

  RSC 182 Cup
Me and the other 182cups that come to the local track days get up to about 170kph (~100-105mph) in 4th down the straight. Maybe our speedos are flattering us but its still pulling quite nice at that speed.

The speedo isnt that far out, 1mph at 30.

But the box ive got in there means im at 6k at 155.

You must have a very special valver to do 155 on the clocks lol

Unless a diesel box gives you an extra 70 bhp ...:clown:

You've somehow succeeded in producing enough power from a 1.8 litre (?) engine at only 6000 rpm to pull the car through the air at 155 mph.

Congratulations. That's an unbelievable achievement.

I agree with Gordon.

It (almost) doesn't matter what your gearing is - to get a Clio sized/shaped car to do 155 mph needs 240-250 bhp.

That's based on 172 bhp getting a Clio to 138 mph as a starting point - the wind resistance that needs to be overcome going from 138 to 155 mph consumes an extra 70-80 bhp.

what mark said 160 on the clock down bruntingthorpe i would estimate at 150ish

i've had 153 on gps out of the V6 down bruntingthorpe (bookfigure) that was showing just over 160 on the clock
