Power steering conversion

Hi all,

I've just bought my 17 year old Son a 98-R reg 1.2 mark 1. Base model and somewhat below the object of his desire; a 182 Trophy!, but beggars can't be choosers. ;)

I have converted a 205 to power-steering before, but that was a good old belt & pulley job. Can anyone please advise what I would need to convert this 1.2?

I know I'll require a power rack & electric pump. How does the pump fit & is it easy to power up? Someone said I might need driveshafts & hubs, but I can't see why! Will I need a new stering column too?

Thanks

Mark.

I don't know anything about that stuff, but surely if you needed to do all that it would just be easier to buy a model up, the RT for instance.

It'll be way too much hassle.

I had a 1.2 Mk1 Phase3, and I found the steering was fine. Never had any trouble really.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

Steering is OK (albeit woolly compared to my 205) & as said, doesn't really need power assistance. There was some stuff on ebay & thought it might work.

As for RT's, they're only 1.4 aren't they? The insurance is hideous as it is :S .

Thanks for the welcome!

get t' scrapper nick all the bits from an RT, rack, pump pipework and resevoir, prob need the alternator mounts etc wont be too hard to do dash and subframe out and rack in, if you have done one before can't seeing it being such a hard job

Fairly easy to do;

Column/rack wise you'll need a PAS rack and steering column from any PAS clio (manual steering column is longer so won't fit on).

Beyond that, AFAIK you'll have a DIET engine in your car where the pump bolts to the front of block - just find a wrecked one of those and grab the pump, longer AUX belt, piping and reservoir.

RT parts won't fit as the stuff mounts in different places (completely different engine).

As said tho, the steering is ok as standard - the other thing to remember is that fitting PAS will rob the car of about an extra 5bhp...

i had power steering put on the 5 turbo lump in mine. used a resovior from a 106, and pump from a 106. then rear engine mount had to be changed to get pipes to connect to the rack, and then powering it was was another story. so all in all, i wouldnt bother.

Cheers for the replies. I'm going to leave it as is for now; the bits available were from a diesel & pump was faulty anyway.

manual steering will make your boy strong! :D ; he needs building up!
