Power steering fluid colour?

Steering seems to have gotten heavier recently, I've checked tyre pressures which are fine. So I checked the PS fluid level which us fine but it's a blacky colour is that right?

Funny this came up, i checked mine last night after a bit of excessive noise and it was black. Changed the fluid this morning, 30 miles later my pump shat my fresh fluid all over the road. New pump on order!
