Power Steering Fluids

  1.6 Ford Focus
Never done this before so I am not sure what I should be looking at...

I went out yesterday and noticed my power steering has become heavy... the tyres are all fine and inflated correctly so I went and had a peek under the bonnet... The fluid seams to be about 5mm below the min marker.

Looks like I need to top that up. My question is; what kind of fluids should I be looking for? I did a quick search online and there seams to be all different kinds. Will any work? Will it make any difference if its different to the fluid that's still left in the tank? and are there specific fluids for renaults etc.?

I can't help a great deal as I got mine from Renault. But if it's not been changed, then I'd consider flushing it through and replacing it. Did mine at the weekend with my 72K service and where it gets so hot its starts to burn and breaks down. You start to get black bits in it. I've heard it was a common problem with the Clio 16v.

It nows feels lovely and smooth.

One of the Renault PDF guides for fluids reccomends Mobil ATF 220 or Renault Matic D2 - local Renault never heard of either lol sent me to Halfrauds!

Slick 50 - anyone tried it?

And as above, how easy is it to flush & replace? :)

Cheers

Normal ATF is all you need. Replacing it is as easy as finding somewhere to drain it off then refilling it and bleeding the system, haven't looked at a 1*2 in a few years now so can't recommend any easy to get to places to drain it off the top of my head.

I used this - Renault Matic D2 . ideally its a 2 person job as extra hands certianly help.

I un bolted and moved the main header tank out the way, unbolted the the power steering resovior and lifted it up as much as possible. check the 2 pipes underneath and identify the return pipe, pull this off and hold both hose and resovior over a large container, I used a 5l empty oil bottle with the top cut off. once gravity has drained the majority, start the engine so it pumps the system through and emptying the old fluid into the container. keep it topped up with new stuff until new fluid is coming out of the return pipe. then put it back together. Probably used 2 bottles in order to get it done properly
