Pre-MOT checks?

  Jap Box
Hi,

Got my MOT in 3 weeks time and I think ive got the most of it checked out, but can someone help me out if ive missed something, and some small bits im worried about.

If all passes then ill obviously renew my membership here :)

Washer motor - Doesnt work, replacement here though.

Wipers, drivers side one snapped in heat, replacement on its way

Reverse lights do not work at all (switch was unplugged because they were stuck on, will this fail?)

Drivers side headlight can be moved slightly if you push it with your hand, its pretty secure though

Steering wheel can be shook up, down, left, right with hands while driving. Nothing seems wrong with the car and when shaking it the wheels are fine (Possibly steering column?)

When turning left and accelerating theres a knocking noise, been told its the driveshaft?

Rear drum automatic adjusters are missing, meaning the brakes have to be manually adjusted evry so often to get them to work properly

Everything else seems to be pretty much fine, all underside has been sealed previously to stop rust. Only thing is the rear drivers arch has some rust bubbling on there, upon poking it/pushing it the arch seems solid enough so will this just be an advisory?

Checked all tyres, exhaust, brakes, lights, seatbelts etc and its all in working order other than the faults above.

Any help would be great :)

i dont think reverse lights have to work but it may be a case of "if its got it, it has to work"

Yep ive had mixed views on this, some say it needs to work, some say it isnt required for an MOT.

If it helps when they were stuck on and I didnt know, the police pulled me over for it, gave me a 14 day producer to fix it. I unplugged the switch and the garage stamped the slip saying the fault was fixed even though they dont come on.

Reverse lights not needed
steering wheel should be secure and lock into positon
washers need to be working, covering both sides of the screen
both front wipers should clear the screeen without leaving large streaks
lights should be securely fixed and display the correct pattern and height
majot Rust/hole shouldnt be within 30cm of a major structual/suspension component
Rear brakes need to be efficient enough to pass roller brake test, as do fronts.

Yeah I'm afraid indication lights have to work. And I'm sure that includes reversing

Did a quick google and found out they wont fail it unless they manage to interferre with any other lamps, which they dont :) glad on that one, gives me a bit more time to fix it.

Thanks for that, steering wheel does lock into place, and is secure, but it just moves slightly if you properly shake it, doesnt affect the steering though.

Washers will be fixed, as will the wipers.

Thanks for the rust point, ill see about repairing that as well as possible.

Ill be sure to get the brakes adjusted before the test then :) fronts are brand new and work fine so no worries on them.

drivers arch should be fine as long as there are no sharp edges sticking out.

Sounds like a nice healthy car you've got there.

Will it even make it to the MOT station?

knocking is probably the cv joint which is bolted on the end of the driveshaft.
any advisories from your last mot?

don't be too harsh, what's the other alternative- fail the mot and either get stung by the garage putting it right or another driver on the road with no mot/insurance/tax!

So because of some split wipers, wiring problem to the washers and an unplugged switch it means the car wont make it there, ive got pretty much all the parts here, its just swapping them.

Thanks

Yeah it got advisory on nearside lower suspension arm bush/pin having play in it, which was then replaced as it was worn completely and ruining the tracking. Only other advisory was two front tyres close to legal limit.

Sounds like a typical south Wales car TBH.

Ive seen a lot worst, no idea how some cars manage to get around without the police stopping them, then I get stopped for "routine" checks all the time.

Another thing today, the heater panel is going funny again, the middle one that turns from window vents to foot vents etc isnt moving properly, feels like something is jamming the mechanism behind it. Has happened before but then it seemed to fix itself again but its back to how it was now, anyone else have this problem? Ive got another panel here as spares but id have to take the whole dash out to swap it over so would rather have an easy fix :) On the plus side upon kicking it the speedo bulbs on the left came back on :)
